 A Priceless Gift

 귀중한 선물

Long ago, an honest merchant lived in Genoa, Italy. 

    오래 전에 정직한 상인이 이탈리아 제노바에 살았습니다. 

His name was Antonio, and he went to different places to support his family by trading. 

    그의 이름은 안토니오 (Antonio)였으며 거래를 통해 가족을 부양하기 위해 다른 곳으로 갔습니다. 

One day, he filled his ship with goods and visited a faraway island. 

    어느 날 그는 배에 물건을 가득 채우고 먼 섬을 방문했습니다. 

There he traded tools for spices and books for nuts. 

    거기서 그는 향신료를 위한 도구와 견과류를 위한 책을 거래했습니다. 

Thanks to Antonio, the islanders could get what they needed.

    안토니오 덕분에 이 섬 사람들은 필요한 것을 얻을 수 있었습니다.

One night, Antonio had dinner with the island’s queen at her palace. 

    어느 날 밤, 안토니오는 궁전에서 섬의 ​​여왕과 저녁을 먹었습니다. 

When dinner was served, rats appeared, and some servants chased them away with sticks.

    저녁 식사가 제공되었을 때, 쥐가 나타 났고, 일부 종들은 막대기로 그들을 쫓아 냈습니다.

Antonio was greatly surprised that there were rats in the palace.

He asked, “Are there no cats on this island?”

The queen looked puzzled. “What is a cat?” she asked.

The merchant said to himself, “What the islanders here need is not tools or books, but cats.” 

     상인은 “여기 섬 사람들에게 필요한 것은 도구 나 책이 아니라 고양이입니다.”라고 혼잣말을 했습니다. 

He brought two cats from his ship and let them run free. 

     그는 배에서 고양이 두 마리를 가져 와서 도망 가게 했습니다. 

“What amazing animals!” cried the queen when she saw all the rats run away. 

      그녀는 모든 쥐들이 도망가는 것을 보고“놀라운 동물들!”이라고 외쳤습니다. 

She gave Antonio a chest that was filled with jewels.

     그녀는 안토니오에게 보석으로 가득 찬 궤(상자)를 주었습니다.

Back in Italy, Antonio told his friends about his good fortune. 

     이탈리아로 돌아온 안토니오는 친구들에게 자신의 행운에 대해 이야기했습니다. 

Luigi, the richest merchant in Genoa, heard the story and was jealous. 

     제노아에서 가장 부유 한 상인 루이지가 그 이야기를 듣고 질투가 났습니다. 

“Cats are worthless,” Luigi thought. “I’ll bring the queen what is really valuable. 

    “고양이는 쓸모가 없어,” 루이지는 생각했습니다.“나는 정말 귀중한 것을 여왕에게 가져갈거야.”

I’m sure that the queen will give me more jewels.”

      여왕이 나에게 더 많은 보석을 줄거라고 나는 확신해.“

Luigi packed his ship with wonderful paintings and other works of art. He took the gifts to the island. 

     루이지는 자신의 배에 멋진 그림과 다른 예술 작품을 담았습니다. 그는 선물을 섬으로 가져 갔습니다. 

To get a chance to meet the queen, he told the islanders a lie that he was a good friend of Antonio’s. 

     여왕을 만날 기회를 갖기 위해 그는 섬 주민들에게 안토니오의 좋은 친구라고 거짓말을 했습니다. 

When the queen heard about Luigi, she invited him to her palace for dinner. 

     여왕은 루이지에 대해 들었을 때 저녁 식사를 위해 그를 궁전에 초대했습니다. 

Before sitting down at the table, Luigi presented the queen with all his gifts, and the queen thanked him again and again. 

     테이블에 앉기 전에 루이지는 여왕에게 모든 선물을 주었고 여왕은 계속해서 그에게 감사했다.

“I’ll repay you with a priceless gift,” said the queen. Luigi watched the queen whisper in a servant’s ear. 

     여왕은“대단히 귀중한 선물로 갚아 주겠다”고 말했습니다. 루이지는 여왕이 하인의 귀에 속삭이는것을 보았습니다. 

He became excited and hopeful. He was sure that he would receive more jewels than Antonio.

     그는 흥분하고 희망적이 되었습니다. 그는 안토니오보다 더 많은 보석을받을 것이라고 확신했습니다.

After a while, the servant returned with a box, and the queen presented it to Luigi. 

     잠시 후, 하인은 상자를 가지고 돌아 왔고, 여왕은 그것을 루이지에게 선물했습니다. 

When Luigi opened the box, he was speechless.There was a kitten in the box. 

     루이지가 상자를 열었을 때 그는 말문이 막혔습니다. 상자에는 새끼 고양이가 있었습니다. 

“Antonio gave us the priceless cats, and we now have some kittens,” said the queen. 

     "안토니오는 귀중한 고양이를 우리에게 주었고, 이제 우리는 새끼 고양이를 몇 마리 가지고있다"고 여왕은 말했습니다.

“In return for the wonderful gifts you gave us, we want to give you what is most valuable to us.”

      "여러분이 우리에게 주신 훌륭한 선물에 대한 대가로, 우리는 우리에게 가장 소중한 것을 당신에게 주려고 합니다."

Luigi realized that, in the queen’s mind, the kitten was worth far more than all the jewels in the world. 

     루이지는 여왕의 마음에 새끼 고양이가 세계의 모든 보석보다 훨씬 가치가 있다는 것을 깨달았습니다. 

He tried to look pleased with the gift. He knew that was the right thing to do.

     그는 선물에 만족해 보려고 노력했습니다. 그는 그것이 옳은 일임을 알았습니다.

 Luigi did not return home a richer man. But he was surely a wiser one.

     루이지는 부자가 돼서  집으로 돌아오지 못했습니다. 그러나 그는 분명히 더 현명한 사람이었습니다.
