The Missing Gold!

사라진 금입니다!

Mr. Reese, the principal, ran across the wet playground.

교장 선생님인 리스 씨는 젖은 운동장을 가로질러 달렸습니다.

“Shirley! Shirley! I need your help!”

"셜리! 셜리! 당신의 도움이 필요해요!"

Shirley was an eighth grade student at Bakersville Middle School.

셜리는 베이커스빌 중학교의 8학년 학생입니다.

She was also the best detective in the whole town.

그녀는 또한 마을 전체에서 최고의 탐정이었어요.

“Is there something wrong?” asked Shirley.

"무슨 문제라도 있나요?" 셜리가 물었다.

“Someone has stolen the gold medal for the talent show!”

"누군가가 탤런트 쇼의 금메달을 훔쳤갔어요!"

Mr. Reese took Shirley to the scene of the crime.

리스 씨는 셜리를 범행 현장으로 데려갔습니다.

There was a case with a broken window.

유리창이 깨지는 사건이 있었습니다.

The silver and bronze medals were still there.

은메달과 동메달은 그대로 있었습니다.

But the gold medal was missing.

하지만 금메달은 사라졌습니다.

There was a poem in its place.

그 자리에는 한 구절의 시가 있었습니다.

Tomorrow is the talent show.

내일은 장기자랑입니다.

Where did the gold medal go?

금메달은 어디로 갔나요?

Look high and low.

높고 낮게 보세요.

You can’t catch me.

Shirley asked, “Could you tell me when this happened?”

셜리가 "언제 이런 일이 일어났는지 말해줄래요?"라고 물었다.

“A little after nine last night.

"어젯밤 9시가 조금 지나서요.

I was making my rounds when I heard a scream.

제가 여기저기 돌아다니는데 비명소리가 들렸어요.

I rushed over and found Jocelyn and the case like this.”

급히 달려와서 조슬린과 이 같은 경우를 알았어요."

“I wonder who else was here last night.”

"어젯밤에 또 누가 왔는지 궁금하군요."

“Sylvia and Harry.

"실비아와 해리요.

They were also practicing for the talent show.

그들은 또한 장기자랑을 위해 연습하고 있었습니다.

I’ll call them to my office.”

제 사무실로 부르겠습니다."

Jocelyn was a ninth grade student with short curly red hair.

조슬린은 짧은 곱슬곱슬한 빨간 머리를 가진 9학년 학생입니다."

“I was practicing my song and I became thirsty.

노래 연습하다가 목이 말라졌어요.

I stepped outside the classroom to get some water.

저는 물을 좀 마시려고 교실 밖으로 나왔습니다.

It was completely dark.

완전히 어두웠어요.

Suddenly, there was a loud sound of thunder.

갑자기 천둥소리가 요란하게 들렸습니다.

I think the thief broke the window at that moment.

그 순간 도둑이 창문을 깬 것 같아요.

Lightning followed right after and it became bright for a second or two.

바로 직후 번개가 따랐고 1~2초간 밝아졌습니다.

Then I saw someone running away from the case.”

그때 그 사건에서 도망가는 사람이 보였어요."

“Did you see the thief’s face?”

"도둑놈 얼굴 봤어요?"

“No, I only saw the thief’s back.

"아니, 도둑의 등만 봤어요.

But the thief had short hair.”

그런데 그 도둑은 머리가 짧았어요."

Next was an eighth grade student, Sylvia.

다음은 실비아라는 8학년 학생입니다.

She was tall with long black hair.

그녀는 긴 검은 머리에 키가 컸습니다.

She said, “I was reading my poem aloud in the classroom.

그녀는 "교실에서 제 시를 소리내어 읽고 있었어요.

I heard a scream and went outside.

비명소리를 듣고 밖으로 나갔어요.

There was a girl next to the case.

사건 옆에 한 소녀가 있었어요.

With the flash from the lightning, it was like a horror movie.

번갯불의 섬광과 함께 공포영화 같았어요.

I got scared so I ran straight home.”

겁이 나서 곧장 집으로 달려갔어요."

“Did you hear the window break?”

"창문이 깨지는 소리 들었어요?"

“No, the thunder was too loud.

"아니, 천둥소리가 너무 컸어요.

Well, I didn’t do it.

제가 한 게 아니에요

I was going to win first place anyway.”

어차피 1등할 생각이었어요."

Harry, a seventh grader, had short blonde hair.

7학년인 해리는 짧은 금발 머리를 가졌습니다.

He said, “Hey, you got the wrong guy.

그는 "이봐요, 사람을 잘못 잡았어요.

I was practicing my dance moves.

춤 연습을 하고 있었어요.

I went home a little before nine.

9시 조금 전에 집에 갔어요.

I didn’t take one step outside the classroom until then.”

그때까지도 교실 밖으로 한 발짝도 나가지 않았습니다."

“Did you hear anything strange?”

"이상한 소리 들었어요?"

“How could I? My music was really loud.”

"어떻게 그럴 수가 있죠? 제 음악은 정말 시끄러웠어요."

“Did you see anyone on the way home?”

"집으로 가는 도중에 누군가를 봤어요?"

“No, I heard someone singing really badly, but I didn’t see anyone.”

"아니요, 누가 정말 노래를 못 부르는 소리를 들었는데 아무도 못 봤어요."

Shirley said, “I don’t need to hear anymore.” Then she turned to the thief.

셜리는 더 이상 들을 필요가 없다고 말했어요. 그리고 나서 그녀는 도둑에게 눈을 돌렸어요.

“Why don’t you bring the medal back before you get into some real trouble?”

"정말 큰일나기 전에 메달을 다시 가져오지 그래요?"
