The other day I was watering the plants in the garden.

며칠 전 저는 정원에서 식물들에게 물을 주고 있는 중이었어요.

 

My neighbor went by and said, “The grass was dry at sunrise and that’s a good sign of rain.”

이웃 사람이 지나가다가 “해 뜰 무렵에 잔디가 말라 있으니 비가 올 좋은 신호예요.”라고 말하는 거 있죠.

 

In the afternoon, we had rain, and I was surprised.

그날 오후에 비가 왔고 저는 놀랐어요.

 

I have noticed it several times since then.

그 이후로도 여러 차례 그것을 목격했고요.

 

Do you know anything about natural weather forecasters?

혹시 여러분들은 자연 속 일기예보관들에 대해서 아는 것이 있나요?

전에 이 꽃을 본 적이 있나요?

 

It’s a morning glory.

바로 나팔꽃이에요.

 

It opens up in fine weather so that it can get lots of sunlight.

나팔꽃은 화창한 날씨에는 많은 햇빛을 받을 수 있도록 활짝 꽃잎을 펼쳐요.

 

When it is closed, rain and bad weather are on the way.

꽃이 오므려지면 비나 나쁜 날씨가 다가오는 것이지요.

The same thing happens with the poor man’s weather glass.

똑같은 일이 뚜껑별꽃에게도 일어나요.

 

It never opens up in wet weather.

그것은 습기가 있는 날씨에는 절대 꽃잎을 열지 않아요.

 

Its closing tells us that it’s going to be rainy.

꽃이 닫혀 있다는 것은 우리에게 곧 비가 올 것이라고 말해 주는 거예요.

 

You know what?

그거 알아요?

 

Its funny name comes from a famous weather saying, “When a rain storm is coming, the poor man is ready for a long break.”

이 꽃의 재미있는 이름이 ‘폭풍우가 오고 있는 중이라면 가난한 사람은 오랜 휴식을 준비한다.’라는 유명한 날씨 속담에서 왔다는 걸요.

A pine cone is another good weather forecaster.

솔방울도 또 다른 좋은 기상예보관이죠.

 

To American Indians the pine cone has been a symbol of wisdom.

아메리카 원주민들에게 솔방울은 지혜의 징표였어요.

 

They have an old weather proverb, “When a pine cone closes up, rain is on the way.”

그들은 ‘솔방울이 꽉 오므라들면 곧 비가 올 것이다’라는 오래된 날씨 속담도 가지고 있답니다.

 

They have used this knowledge in farming for a long time.

그들은 오랫동안 그러한 지식을 농사에 활용해 왔어요.

A pine cone has the seeds of the pine tree.

솔방울은 소나무의 씨앗들을 품고 있어요.

 

The seeds must be light so that the wind can blow them far away.

바람이 씨앗들을 멀리 날려 보낼 수 있도록 씨앗들의 무게가 가벼워야만 하죠.

 

In wet weather, the pine cone closes up to keep its seeds dry and light.

축축한 날씨에는 솔방울이 씨앗들을 건조하고 가볍게 유지하기 위해 오므라들어요.

 

When the time is right, the cone opens up and spreads its seeds!

시기가 적절할 때 솔방울은 펼쳐서 씨앗들을 퍼뜨린답니다!
