The Best Compliment Ever

Scene 1

It is the last week of school. Each student has just picked a piece of paper with a name on it.

Ms. Kemp: “Compliments for Classmates” will be our last activity of the school year. Did everyone pick a name?

Class: Yes, Ms. Kemp.

Students are talking to each other.

Beth: So, whose name did you pick?

Lucy: (smiling) I got Boyd. I have a lot to say about him. What about you, Beth?

Beth: (looking worried) Uh, I picked Peter’s name.

Lucy: Peter? Oh, no! It won’t be easy to find something to compliment him on.

Steve: Yeah. He doesn’t talk much and just sits at his desk all day long.

Beth: (scratching her head) Well, I’ll have to find something.

Scene 2

Beth is at home talking with her parents about the activity.

Beth: Everyone has long lists of compliments for other classmates, except for me. I don’t know what to compliment Peter on.

Mom: Think carefully. There should be something.

Beth: Well, he’s clean. He washes his face every day.

Mom: That’s not a compliment. Everybody does that.

Dad: Try again. I’m sure you can find something good to say about him.

Scene 3

The next day, there is an accident at school. Boyd’s foot is stuck in a bicycle stand.

Boyd: (with arms in the air) Help! I need help!

Beth: Stay still. I’m trying to pull your foot out.

Boyd: (screaming) Ouch! That hurts!

Peter: Let me help. Just a minute.

Peter runs to the school’s kitchen and comes back with butter.

Peter: I’m going to put this butter on your foot.

Boyd: What? Butter?

Peter: Just stay calm.

Beth: (pointing to Boyd’s foot) Wow! It’s working! Boyd’s foot is coming out of the stand.

Scene 5

It is the last day of school, and the students are complimenting each other.

Ms. Kemp: Joanne, what compliment do you have for Beth?

Joanne: Beth, you’re always cheerful. You’re also kind and fair to everybody.

Beth: Thanks, Joanne. It’s so nice of you to say so.

Ms. Kemp: Beth, let’s hear from you now. You picked Peter’s name.

Beth: (hesitating) Well, I think Peter is creative. Peter, you’re ... uh ... creative.

Peter: (shyly) Really?

Ms. Kemp: What made you think Peter is creative?

Beth: (after a long pause) When Boyd’s foot got stuck in the bicycle stand the other day, Peter got it out by using butter. That was creative.

Boyd: Yeah! Nobody else thought of doing that.

Steve: I didn’t know that. Well, then, I also think he’s creative.

Beth: (confidently) Yeah, Peter, you ARE creative!

Peter: Thanks, Beth! It’s the best compliment ever!
