Family: Love It, Hate It, and Can’t Do Without It

  가족: 사랑하고, 미워하고, 또 없어서는 안 되는  것

The word family may have different meanings to different people.

  ‘가족’이라는 말은 사람들마다 다른 의미를 가질 수 있습니다.

We asked our readers, “How are you doing with your family?”

  우리는  독자들에게  “가족과  어떻게  지내나요?”라고 물었습니다.

Here are some of their replies.

  여기  그 대답들  중 몇 가지가  있습니다.

I often ask myself whether I get along with my family members, and more often than not, I’m not sure whether I really do.

  나는  종종  가족들과  잘 지내는지  나 자신에게  물어보는데,  많은  경우에  잘 지내는지  확신하지 못한다.

For one thing, they bother me all the time.

  한 예를  들자면,  가족들은  나를  항상  귀찮게 한다.

My sister comes into my room without my permission and shouts at me to wake up on Sunday mornings.

  언니는  일요일  아침에  허락도  없이 내 방에  들어와서  일어나라고 소리친다.

Next, Mom asks me to walk the dog, and then Dad tells me to clean my room.

  그다음에는  엄마가  개를 산책시키라고  하시고,  그러고 나면 아빠가  방을  청소하라고  하신다.

They keep getting on my nerves until I get angry at them.

  가족들은  내가  화가  날 때까지  내 신경을 건드린다. 

But I always end up loving them because  they  have  been  with  me  at  my  worst,  still  stick  by  me now, and will continue to do so in the future.

  하지만  결국엔  가족들을  사랑하게  되는데,  그들은  내가 가장  어려울  때 함께 있어  주었고,  지금도  내 곁을  지키며,  앞으로도   계속해서

그럴  것이기 때문이다.

I share a room with my sister, who is two years older than me.

  나는  언니와  방을 함께 쓰는데,  언니는 나보다 두 살이   많다.

When she became a teenager, her mood started changing every minute.

  언니는 십대가 되었을 때,  기분이 매분마다  바뀌기    시작했다.

She would lose her temper over nothing one moment and happily read a book or watch a film the next.

  어느  순간  갑자기  아무것도  아닌  일에  화를  내다가 바로 다음 순간 즐겁게 책을 읽거나  영화를  보곤 했다.

It was difficult for me to put up with her.

  나는  언니를  견디기 힘들었다.

Now it’s my turn to be a teenager.

  이젠  내가  십대가  될 차례이다.

My sister is still one, but she is getting better.

  언니도  아직 십 대이지만  점점 나아지고  있다.

Whenever I lose my temper, she tries to support me.

  내가  화를  낼 때마다  언니는 나를 지지해 주려고  노력한다.

I also understand her better than before because now I know what it feels like to be a teenager.

  지금은  나도 십대라는  것이  어떤  느낌인지  알기 때문에  예전보다  언니를  더 잘 이해한다.

As we get to know each other better, we feel greater love toward each other.

  우리가  서로를 잘 알아 갈수록 우리는  서로에게  더 큰 사랑을   느낀다.

My older brother, who entered university this year, is the golden child.

  우리  형은  올해  대학에  들어갔는데,  누구에게나 사랑받는 아들이다.

He is a perfect son at home and a perfect student at school.

  형은 집에서는 완벽한 아들이고 학교에서는 완벽한     학생이다.

Needless to say, it is really stressful to have such a shining brother.

  말할  필요도  없이,  눈부신  형이  있다는 것은 정말 골치 아픈  일이다.

Well, in fact, he is not perfect and is poor at one thing that I am great at.

  하지만  사실 형도  완벽하지  않고,  내가 가장 잘하는  일에는  형편없다.

He has no eye for fashion, and I always help him whenever he has a hard time choosing clothes for a date.

  형은  패션을  보는 눈이 없어서,  데이트에 입을 옷을 고르는  걸 어려워할  때 내가  친절을 베풀 수밖에    없다.

I feel pleased when he thanks me for my help and appreciates my fashion sense.

  형이  내 도움을  고마워하고  내 패션 감각을  알아줄 때 기분이  좋다.

It is not always difficult  for  me  to  live  with  the  perfect  brother,  and  I  believe  in  “every  man for his own trade.”

  완벽한  형과 함께 사는 것이 항상 어려운 일은 아니며,  “굼벵이도  구르는 재주가  있다.”는  것을  나는    믿는다.
