따뜻한 마음을 가진 공학자를 만나다

Leading Free Wheelchair  Mission,  Dr.  Don  Schoendorfer has  given  away  wheelchairs  to  those  in need around the world.

Don  Schoendorfer 박사는 Free Wheelchair Mission을 이끌면서 전 세계의 어려운 사람들에게 휠체어를 기부해 오고 있습니다.

We met him last month, and he told us about his life.

우리는 지난달에 그를 만났는데,  그는 우리에게 그의 인생에 대하여 말해  주었습니다.

Q. At the peak of your career, you started to look for ways to help others.

Why did you decide to focus on wheelchairs?

When I visited Morocco in 1979, I was shocked to see a woman who was crawling across a road.

1979년 모로코를 방문했을 때, 저는 도로를 가로질러 기어가고 있는 여성을 보고  놀랐습니다.

She had lost the use of her legs in an accident.

그녀는 사고로 그녀의 다리를 움직일 수가  없었습니다.

Nobody was paying any attention to her.

어느 누구도 그녀에게 관심을 보이지 않았습니다.

This scene often came back to me, and one day the idea of giving away wheelchairs came to mind.

이 장면이 제게 자주 떠올랐고,  어느 날 휠체어를 기부해야겠다는 생각이 마음속에  떠올랐습니다.

I started to look seriously into people who need wheelchairs, and I came to learn the harsh reality.

저는 휠체어가 필요한 사람들에 대하여 진지하게 조사하기 시작했고 참담한 현실을 알게  되었습니다.

About 100 million people in the world need a wheelchair,  but  they  can’t  afford  one  because wheelchairs are very expensive.

전 세계에서 약 1억 명의 사람들이 휠체어를 필요로 하는데,  그들은 휠체어가 너무 비싸서 살 형편이 안   되었습니다.

Q. How did you solve the problem?

Q.  어떻게 그 문제를 해결하셨나요?

I wanted to design a wheelchair that would be light and strong.

저는 가볍고 튼튼한 휠체어를 디자인하고  싶었습니다.

But more importantly, it had to be cheap and be made from easily accessible parts.

그러나 더 중요한 점은 그것이 값이 싸야만 했고 쉽게 구할 수 있는 부품들로 만들어질 수 있는 것이어야 했습니다.

Instead of wheels made for wheelchairs, I settled on bicycle wheels.

휠체어를 위한 바퀴 대신에 저는 자전거 바퀴를 (사용하기로)   결정했습니다.

For the seat, I chose a plastic lawn chair.

의자로 저는 플라스틱으로 만든 잔디밭용 의자를 선택했습니다.

It was all held together by a simple steel frame I designed myself.

그것은 제가 디자인한 간단한 강철 틀에 의해 결합되었습니다.

My friends thought I had gone off the deep end.

제 친구들이 제가 극단으로 치달았다고 생각했습니다.

My wife, who was supportive at first, soon got tired of my messing up our garage.

처음에는 지지를 보냈던 제 아내는 제가 우리 집 차고를 어지럽히는 것에 곧 싫증이   났습니다.

But I kept going and finally made a better wheelchair.

그러나 저는 계속했고 마침내 더 나은 휠체어를  만들었습니다.

It could be built and delivered anywhere in the world for less than $80.

그것은 80달러 미만의 가격에 만들어져서 전 세계의 어디에라도 배달될 수  있었습니다.

Q. Do you have any unforgettable stories about your wheelchair?

Q. 당신의 휠체어에 관한 잊지 못할 이야기가   있습니까?

Sure. I built the first one hundred wheelchairs by hand.

물론이죠.  저는 첫 100대의 휠체어를 손으로 (직접)  만들었습니다.

One of them was given to a 16-year-old girl in India.

그것들 중의 하나가 인도의 한 16살 소녀에게 주어졌습니다.

She had lived her whole life in a small room.

그녀는 평생토록 작은 방에서 지냈습니다.

When she got her wheelchair, she went out by herself.

그녀가 휠체어를 받았을 때,  그녀는 자신의 힘으로 밖으로 나갔습니다.

Finding that she could get from one place to another under her own power, she burst into tears.

그녀가 스스로 한 곳에서 다른 곳으로 움직일 수 있다는 것을 알고 그녀는 갑자기 울음을   터뜨렸습니다.

Q. What has Free Wheelchair Mission done so far?

Q. Free Wheelchair Mission은 지금까지 무슨 일을 했나요?

Working with other like-minded groups, we have distributed wheelchairs in over 90  countries  for almost 20 years.

뜻이 같은 다른 단체들과 함께 일하면서,  우리는 거의 20년 동안 90개가 넘는 나라들에서 휠체어를  기부해왔습니다.

At last in 2017, the one-millionth wheelchair was delivered.

마침내  2017년에,  100만  번째  휠체어가 전달되었습니다.

Each one represents a life changed.

각각의 것(휠체어)은 변화한 삶을 나타냅니다.

Someone can now go to school or to work.

어떤 이는 이제 학교에 가거나 직장에 갈 수 있게 된  것이지요.

Q. Please tell our readers a little about your future plans.

We’re going to deliver our next million wheelchairs by 2025.

우리는 2025년까지 다음 100만 대의 휠체어를 전달하려 합니다.

It’s going to take half the time it took to give out the first million.

그것은 첫 100만 대를 주는 데 걸렸던 시간의 절반이 걸릴 것입니다.

We’ll never slow down.

우리는 절대 속도를 늦추지 않을 것입니다.

•2001  FWM(Free  Wheelchair  Mission)  started  to  give  away wheelchairs.

•2001.  FWM은  휠체어를  기부하기 시작했다.

•2017  FWM  delivered  its  one-millionth  wheelchair.

•2025  FWM  is  going  to  deliver  its  two-millionth wheelchair.

Dr. Don Scheondorfer

Dr. Don  Schoendorfer  is  a biomedical  engineer  who  lives  in Santa Ana,   California.

Don  Schoendorfer  박사는 California의 Santa  Ana에 사는 생물의학  공학자이다.

He has  achieved  a  great  deal  in the  field of  biomedical  technology.

그는 생물 의학 기술 분야에서 많은 업적을 성취해  왔다.

In 2001, he founded Free Wheelchair Mission, a non-profit  organization, and started to give away  wheelchairs to  people  in need.

2001년 그는 비영리 단체인 Free Wheelchair Mission을 설립하고 어려운 사람들에게 휠체어를 기부하기 시작했다.

He has  received  several  awards  for  the work  that  Free Wheelchair  Mission  has  done  around  the  world.

그는 Free Wheelchair Mission이 전 세계에 행하였던 일로 인해 여러 상을 받아 왔다.
