식물을 잘 키우는 사람들

I complained the whole day.

나는 온종일 불평했다.

My parents were making me work on the neighborhood project, but I had far better things to do.

우리 부모님은 나를 이웃 프로젝트에서 일하게 하셨지만, 나에게는 훨씬 더 나은 할 일들이 있었다.

I didn't understand why we were working on this place.

나는 우리가 왜 이곳에서 일하고 있어야 하는지 이해하지 못했다.

It was just the ugly, old, empty lot across from Johnny's Shop.

그곳은 그저 Johnny's Shop 건너편에 있는 볼품없고, 오래되고, 텅 빈 지역이었다.

It was full of wild plants, fast food wraps, old newspapers, broken glass, and every other kind of dirty trash you can imagine.

그곳은 잡초와 패스트푸드 포장지와 낡은 신문, 깨진 유리, 그리고 상상할 수 있는 모든 다른 종류의 더러운 쓰레기로 가득 차 있었다.

As I looked at it that first morning, I thought, "I bet there are snakes in there, too."

첫날 아침에 그곳을 보았을 때, 나는 "틀림없이 저 안에는 뱀들도 있을 거야."라고 생각했다.

 

There were twenty of us—all ages and sizes—ready to work that day.

그날 일할 준비가 된—모든 연령대와 몸집을 가진—우리 20명이 있었다.

I didn't think that we could clean up this awful mess and turn it into a garden.

We were all wondering where to begin.

That first day was the toughest.

On the weekends that followed, we made rows, planted flower and vegetable seeds, and watered them.

After about two weeks, I stopped complaining when I found the plants had started popping up!

First, the lettuce and then the beans and the tomatoes.

처음에는 상추, 그러고 나서, 콩과 토마토.

They grew so fast. I couldn't believe it!

The bean plants grew an inch, and the tomatoes doubled in size in just a few days.

Now, two months later, I like to go there every day to see what new flowers are ready to pop up.

두 달이 지난 지금, 나는 매일 어떤 새로운 꽃들이 피어날 준비가 되었는지 보러 그곳에 가는 것을 좋아한다.

Lots of people in the neighborhood meet there to enjoy the sights and to talk together.

이웃의 많은 사람이 그곳에서 만나 풍경을 즐기고 함께 담소를 나눈다.

 

Tonight, it suddenly hit me—what a good thing we did!

오늘 밤, 갑자기 생각났다—우리가 얼마나 좋은 일을 했는가!

I'm proud I have been a part of it.

나는 내가 그 일의 일부였다는 것이 자랑스럽다.

I'm in charge of picking flowers for the nursing home on Fourth Street.

나는 'Fourth Street'에 있는 양로원을 위해 꽃을 따는 일을 맡았다.

The vegetables will go to every kitchen in our town.

채소들은 우리 마을의 모든 부엌으로 갈 것이다.

But even better, an ugly and dirty lot that people didn't like has become a pretty garden for everyone.

하지만 훨씬 더 좋은 것은, 사람들이 좋아하지 않았던 볼품없고 더러운 지역이 모두를 위한 예쁜 정원이 되었다는 것이다.
