 The Hidden Figures of NASA

                   NASA의 숨겨진 인물들

I watched the movie Hidden Figures last weekend.

나는 지난주말에 (히든 피겨스)라는 영화를 보았다.

It was a movie about three African-American women who worked at NASA.

그것은 NASA에서 일했던 세 명의 아프리카계 미국인 여성들에 대한 영화였다.

They began their career in the 1960s as “human computers.”

그들은 1960년대에 ‘인간 컴퓨터(계산원)으로 일을 시작했다.

However, they dreamed of becoming space experts at NASA and tried hard to get over difficulties

하지만, 그들은 NASA에서 우주 전문가가 되기를 꿈꾸었고 어려움을 극복하기위해 열심히 노력했다.

Katherine Johnson was one of the three “hidden figures” in this movie .

Katherine Johnson은 이 영화에서 세 명의 ‘숨겨진 인물들’ 중 한명이었다.

She worked hard and showed a talent in math, and her manager AI Harrison recognized her ability.

그녀는 열심히 일했고 수학에서 재능을 보였으며, 그녀의 상사인 kkkkkdms f은 그녀의 능력을 알아차렸다.

One day, he got upset when Katherine was missing from her desk for too long

어느 날, 그는 Katherine이 너무 오래 자리를 비웠을 때 화가 났다.

AI asked where Katherine had been, and she answered.

AI은 Katherine에게 어디에 갔었는지 물었고 그녀는 대답했다.

Katherine  : The bathroom. There are no COLORED bathrooms in this building. I have to run half a mile away just to use the bathroom

Katherine  : 화장실이요. 이건물에는 유색 인종 전용 화장실이 없어요. 저는 단지 화장실을 사용하기 위해                반 마일을 달려가야 해요.

Hearing this, I felt really sorry for her.  이말을 듣고서, 나는 그녀가 정말로 안됐다고 느꼈다.

However, I was glad that she had courage to talk to the manager about the problem.

그러나 나는 그 문제에 대해 상사에게 말 한 그녀의 용기를 보고 기뻤다. 

This made AI Harrison break down the “Colored Ladies Room” sign

이것은 AI Harrison으로 하여금 ‘유색 여성 화장실’ 표지판을 부수게 만들었다.

Mary Jackson was the character I liked the most of the three.

Mary Jackson은 셋 중에 가장 마음에 드는 인물이었다.

She wanted to learn more about rocket science, but she wasn’t allowed to go to a white school.

그녀는 로켓공학에 대해 더 많이 배우고 싶었지만 백인 학교에 다니는 것이 허락되지 않았다.

So, she asked a judge to give her permossion.

그래서 그녀는 판사에게 허락해 달라고 요청했다.

Mary : I can’t change the color of my skin. so...I have no choice but to be the first. Your Honor, of all the cases you’ll hear today, which one will matter in a hundred years? 

which one will make you the “first”?

저는 제 피부색을 바꿀 수는 없어요, 그래서...저는 ‘최초’가 되는 것 이외에는 선택이 없어요. 당신이 오늘 들은 모든 사건중에서 , 백 년 뒤에 어느 것이 중요할까요? 어느 것이 판사님을 ‘최초’로 만들까요?

The judge was impressed by what she said and finally gave her permission.

판사는 그녀가 말한 것에 감명을 받고 마침내 그녀에게 허락해 주었다.

Mary sood up for herself and for other African-Americans.

Mary 는 그녀 자신과 다른 아프리카계 미국인들 편에 섰다.

That was what impressed me most in the movie.

그것은 영화에서 나를 가장 감동하게 한 점이었다.

Finally, she became the first African-Americans woman engineer at NASA.

마침내, 그녀는 NASA에서 최초의 아프리카계 미국인 여성 공학자가 되었다.

Dorothy Vaughan was the last “hidden figure.” 

Dorothy Vaughan은 마지막 “히든 피겨(숨겨진 인물)” 였다.

 When IBM computers were installed at NASA in 1961, she was worried the “human computers”  would lose their jobs.

1961년 NASN에 IBM 컴퓨터가 설치 되었을 때, 그녀는 ‘인간 컴퓨터들(계산원들)’이 직업을 잃을까봐 걱정했다.

 

She studied a new programming language, FORTRAN.

그녀는 새로운 프로그래밍언어인 포트란을 공부했다

She also taught it to her team members.

그녀는 또한 그것을 그녀의 팀원들에게 가르쳤다.

Later, when she was asked to be the leader of a new IBM team, she made a suggestion.

Dorothy: I’m not accepting the offer if I can’t bring my ladies with me.

We need a lot of people to program that machine .

Thanks to Dorthy, her team members could become programmers.

Dorothy 덕분에 , 그녀의 팀원들은 프로그래머가 될 수 있었다.

She wasn’t afraid of change and used it as a chance.

그녀는 변화를 두려워하지 않고 그것을 기회로 이용했다.

That’s what I need to learn from her.

그것이 내가 그녀에게서 배울 필요가 있는 점이다.

Watching this movie, I could learn how to face challenges in life.

이 영화를 보면서, 삶에서 어떻게 도전에 직면해야 하는지를  배울 수 있었다.

I won’t forget the tears and laughter of Katherine, Mary, and Dorothy.

나는 Katherine, Mary, 그리고 Dorothy의 눈물과 웃음을 잊지 않을 것이다.
