M: Attention, please, Fine View Library users. We have an announcement for you. As we’re sure all of you know, the city began building a new library next door early last year. We’re glad to let you know that the construction has been completed. Next week, we’ll be moving the books from the old library to the new one. The new library will open on Saturday, March 20. It’s more comfortable and more spacious than the old one. Please check the library website for more information about the new library. We really look forward to seeing you at the new library.

Do you want a fulfilling job? Do you want it to lead to a successful career? To make your dream a reality, it is important to choose the right college major. Freshmen often change their majors or even change colleges to switch majors. If you don’t know how to match your aptitudes and talents to your choices, you could end up like these freshmen. Boston University is visiting Kenner High School this Friday at 4 p.m. We’re holding a briefing session in the school auditorium on all the different majors for graduating students. Don’t miss this chance to find out which one is right for you.

M: Hi, Evelyn. Welcome to my house. I have the movie ready. Come in!

W: Thanks for inviting me. What are we going to watch?

M: A science fiction movie about AI robots destroying humanity. [Pause] Here we go. The movie’s starting.

W: The screen looks a little different. Is this for 3D display?

M: Yes. You have to wear special glasses. I put yours on the table there for you.

W: [Pause] Wow, it looks like the robots are coming to me and talking to my face now.

M: 3D technology makes everything look real. Isn’t the technology amazing?

W: It sure is! Seeing it in 3D completely changes the movie-watching experience.

M: I love 3D movies!

W: I think I do too. This is my first experience but it’s fantastic.

M: Yeah. I’m happy you like it.

W: Good morning, students! Last class, you learned about animals’ visual and chemical signals. Today, we’re going to talk about other signals. Do you know some animals communicate with each other by using auditory signals? Auditory signals have various advantages. Unlike visual signals, they can be used in the dark. Also, they can contain much more information than chemical signals. On the negative side, animals often need to use a lot of energy to produce auditory signals. For example, some insects lose 2 to 3% of their body weight to make their long-lasting calls. Also, enemies of most animals usually detect auditory signals. Before we move on, let’s listen to some different auditory signals used in different conditions.

W: Honey, it worries me that Josh spends so much time on his smartphone and computer.

M: I know. But almost everything requires a digital device nowadays. It wouldn’t hurt him to become familiar with them.

W: But he doesn’t read books or write on paper very much.

M: Sure, but he reads e-books on his tablet and types up his papers on the computer just like most people.

W: I know what you mean, but have you seen his handwriting? It’s really bad. I think it’s because he’s stuck on those devices.

M: Honey, don’t worry. It’s not a big problem. When was the last time you actually wrote something by hand except to just jot down notes?

W: I can’t even remember. But I send a lot of texts and emails.

M: See? Digital devices are here to stay and we’ve got to get good at using them.

W: You’ve got a point there.

M: It’s the digital era, so we can’t let Josh fall behind.

W: True. I’ll just make sure he takes breaks while using them.

6.

M: Sandra, I heard that you’re going to buy a car.

W: Yeah. I’ve had my current car for almost 10 years.

Actually, I’m planning on buying a hybrid car.

M: Why do you want to buy a hybrid car?

W: For our environment. As you know, it doesn’t emit as many pollutants as other types of cars.

M: But isn’t it more expensive than a diesel or gasoline car?

W: Yeah, it’s a bit more expensive. But I think it’s important to reduce the car emissions for the earth.

M: Oh, you’re talking like an environmentalist.

W: I’m serious. Unless people buy a hybrid car with reduced car emissions, the environment will get worse and worse.

M: Well, you’re right in a sense.

7.

M: Good afternoon. May I help you?

W: Yes. I made a reservation through a travel agency.

My name is Julia Williams.

M: All right. Do you have your booking confirmation?

W: It’s somewhere in my email. I can find it.

M: That’s okay. I’ll just search your name in the computer. [Typing sound] I’m sorry, but I can’t find your name in the hotel’s reservations.

M: Let me double-check. [Typing sound] Nope. You’re not in here.

W: I’ll look for my confirmation email on my phone. Oh! I just remembered. I made the reservation under

W: Hmm. That’s strange. I made the reservation a month ago.

my husband’s name.

M: Okay, what’s his name?

W: David Williams.

M: Just a moment. [Typing sound] Yup, here it is. It says you have a reservation for 3 nights.

W: Yes, that’s right.

M: Great. Just sign here and I’ll give you your room key.

8.

M: Excuse me. Could you help me find these on the list?

W: Sure. Let me see. Oh, they’re all Edgar Allan Poe books.

M: Yes. Do you have them?

W: I’ll check the computer. You look familiar. Are you by any chance the actor from the musical, The Man in the Mask?

M: Yes. How did you know that?

W: I saw it last Saturday. You played Aramis, didn’t you?

M: Yes! I’m flattered you recognized me.

W: I love musicals. I go almost every weekend. Looks like you really love Edgar Allan Poe.

M: Actually, I’m playing him in my next play.

W: Oh, cool! Well, the computer says we have them all. I can show you where they are. Follow me, please.

M: Thanks. I’m glad I can buy them all in one place.

W: Okay, here they are. Well, if it’s not too much trouble, could I have your autograph?

M: Sure.

W: Look, Dad! You can see the entrance to the castle from here.

M: Wow! It’s amazing to see it in person.

W: I know. For being over three hundred years old, it’s still in pretty good shape. That section of the wall behind the entrance sign is damaged though.

M: I wonder if there’s an event happening. Both doors of the gate are open.

W: In the past they’d only open both doors for kings, right?

M: Yes. Oh, look at the rectangular pond on the other side of the gate.

W: That’s cool. Not all castles had ponds. Do you think that building with four columns is the main building?

M: It is. It used to have six columns, but two of them were destroyed in a fire.

W: How do you know so much about history, Dad?

M: I just read a lot of books. Shall we look around?

W: Okay. Can we start at the round tower next to that tree?

M: Sure! Let’s go!

10.

M: Honey, I’m home.

W: Hi, honey. Do you know what I did today? I rearranged Logan’s room. Let me show you.

M: Oh, cool! You hung the picture of Logan playing soccer on the wall.

W: Yes. And I put the lamp I bought last week on the desk.

M: Good. The light will help reduce strain on his eyes when he reads.

W: And look at the heart-shaped cushion on the bed. I made it myself.

M: He’s going to love that. Oh, you put his trophy between miniature cars.

W: I thought it’d look good there.

M: It does. And I like the two plants under the window.

W: They help freshen up the room. Fortunately, Logan was happy to see his rearranged room.

M: That’s great. Great job, honey.

W: Thanks.

11.

M: Good morning, Sophia. Is everything almost set up for the company anniversary party tonight?

W: Hey, Jonathan. Yeah, just about done.

M: Great. So you’ve confirmed our reservation for the big meeting room at Pine Restaurant?

W: Yes. I called the restaurant earlier.

M: Good. I  just checked the  guest list. Most  of the guests have said they’re coming.

W: I think it’ll be a big party.

M: The more, the better.

W: That’s what I think, too. And I received the special wine I ordered for the party this morning.

M: I think the guests will like it. And I got the company history video ready.

W: Yeah. And on the way to the restaurant, I’m going to buy some flowers at a flower shop to put on the tables.

M: Good idea.

12

M: Hey, Claire. What are you doing on your computer?

Surfing the Internet?

W: Oh, hey, Dave. No. I’m working on my politics presentation for next week. It’s about local policies.

M: Sounds interesting. Can I see it?

W: Sure. I interviewed some local politicians and filmed the interviews for my presentation.

M: Oh, cool. So you got to meet them in person?

W: Yeah. I thought it’d be good to hear directly from them about local policies.

M: Great idea. It’ll add some authenticity to your presentation.

W: Thanks. In this part in the video, this local councilwoman gives a really good insight into the upcoming election. I just wish the audio was a little louder.

M: Hmm. You should add subtitles to her interview.

W: Good idea. But I’ve never done it. Could you do that for me?

M: Sure. It’s really easy.
