M: Hi, Emma. What are you doing?
W: I’m taking an online class.
M: Do you like taking classes online? Personally, I prefer taking classes in person.
W: I’m the opposite. I prefer online classes because I can take the classes whenever I want.
M: That’s true. I like that, too. But I think they lack social interactions.
W: No, you can have conversations and exchange ideas online, too.
M: I know, but it’s more difficult to develop relationships with classmates and teachers online.
W: I can see that. For me, though, the best thing about taking online classes is that I can learn at my own pace.
M: That’s true. If you miss something from a lecture, you can just replay it and listen again.
W: Yeah. There are good points and bad points with online classes.
M: Right. But it makes sense to try to get used to online learning since it’ll probably only get more common.

[Script & Translation] [Cell phone rings.] M: Hello.
W: Hello, Mr. Brown. This is Mia Bush. I emailed you some files last night. Did you get them?
M: Yes. I really like your revised idea for the indoor garden.
W: I’m glad to hear that. Have you thought about the design of your bedroom?
M: Yes. I want it to be like a cozy library, with some bookshelves.
W: I can do that. You must be a book lover. What about the lighting? I think soft lighting would fit the mood.
M: That’s exactly what I was thinking. It’d create a nice, relaxing mood.
W: Okay. I’ll send you some sample photos of some bedrooms I designed before. Let’s talk again after you see them.
M: Sounds good. Can I stop by your office later today to talk with you?
W: Sure. Drop by anytime after 2.
M: Okay. I’ll be there around 2:30. I’m looking forward to moving to my new house.

M: Wow, Stacy. I like how you’ve set up your desk.
W: Thanks. I think I’m ready to start my online video podcast now.
M: Nice microphone! But, what’s that disk-shaped thing wired to the microphone stand?
W: It’s called a pop filter. It’s a noise protection filter
for the microphone.
M: I see. That ring beside the monitor must be a light.
W: Yes. I don’t want my face to look dark. I want my viewers to be able to see me clearly.
M: For sure. That little thing attached to the top of the computer monitor is a video camera, right?
W: Yes, it’s my new high quality webcam.
M: There are two penguins. Are those Bluetooth speakers?
W: Yes, they are. My friend Linda gave them to me.
M: They’re cute! And I guess having your smartphone on the small tripod next to the keyboard makes it easy to see any messages you get.
W: Yeah, that’s right.
M: You’ve created quite a comfortable space.

M: Veronica, let’s check if we have everything for Grandpa’s 70th birthday party.
W: Okay. Did you finish editing the video we’ll play?
M: Yeah. I already copied it onto the laptop computer. I hope he’ll like it.
W: I’m sure he will. I’ve packed the camera and charged the battery.
M: Great. Who’s going to pick up the cake from the shop?
W: Mom will take care of it. I was thinking that we should plan something to do after we eat.
M: How about playing some board games? Grandpa likes them.
W: Great idea. But our board games are all pretty difficult.
M: My friend James has a lot of board games.
W: Oh, then could you go and borrow some fun and easy board games from him?
M: Sure. While I do that, you should hang some balloons. They’re in the box over there.
W: Okay, I will. Let’s hurry.
남: Veronica, 할아버지의 70세 생신 파티를 위해 모든 것이 갖 춰졌는지 확인해 보자.

M: Hello. How can I help you?
W: Yes, I’m checking out. Here’s the key.
M: Thanks. How was your stay in our hotel?
W: It was very relaxing. My family really enjoyed the ocean view from our room.
M: I’m so glad to hear that. The room is $200 per night, and you stayed for two nights.
W: Right. We also ordered room service last night.
M: Yes, that came to $150. Would you like to pay for parking now too?
W: Sure. How much is parking?
M: It’s $25 per night, so it comes to $50.
W: Okay. Here is a promotion coupon from my travel agency.
M: Great. This coupon saves you 10% from the room charge. But it doesn’t apply to room service or parking.
W: All right. Here is my credit card.

W: Hi, John. Are you ready for the invention idea contest?
M: Actually, I stopped working on it.
W: What? Aren’t you entering the contest?
M: Unfortunately, no. I missed the submission deadline. W: Really? Sorry to hear that. I liked your idea about an eco-friendly lamp. I thought it was a good product
idea.
M: Thanks. It was perfect for this year’s contest theme.
W: It was. Even the science teacher praised your idea, didn’t she?
M: I know, but I didn’t get my presentation video submitted on time.
W: What happened? You said you finished your video weeks ago.
M: I misread the deadline. I thought I had a week left to edit and then missed the deadline.
W: Oh, I’m sorry to hear that.
M: That’s okay. I learned a lot while preparing for the contest.
W: Good. I’m sure it was an invaluable experience for you.

W: Jason, what are your plans for the summer vacation?
M: I’m planning to go to Lake Festival. Have you heard of it?
W: No, I haven’t. What kind of festival is it?
M: It’s a performing arts festival. It’s held in Verona, which is a small city.
W: Is it a new festival?
M: No, it has a long history. It started in 1974.
W: Wow! Is it an annual festival?
M: Yeah. It’s held every July and August. And it’s known for having a great floating stage on the lake.
W: That sounds cool! Tickets must be really expensive.
M: Yes, they’re a bit expensive, but there’s a 25%
discount for students under the age of 26.
W: Oh, cool. Be sure to send me pictures from the festival!
M: Okay, I will.

M: Mia, are you on your tablet again?
W: Yeah. I’m looking at a list of portable projectors. I’m planning on buying one.
M: What for?
W: To watch movies on a big screen. But it’s difficult to decide. Can you help me choose one of these?
M: Sure. What’s your budget?
W: I don’t want to spend over $300.
M: Okay. I recommend one with 4 K Ultra HD resolution. With a higher resolution, you can have better image quality.
W: You’re right. Oh, this one comes with a folding screen. What do you think?
M: Where do you plan on watching movies? If you’ll just be at home, you probably don’t need a folding screen.
W: Good point. I don’t think I’ll need it. I’ll just use a
white wall in the living room or bedroom as a screen. I’ll get one of these other two.
M: Good. As for battery life, the longer the better, right?
W: Yeah, I agree. I’ll order this one, then.

W: Ben, didn’t you say that you were meeting your friend at 2 o’clock?
M: Oh, my, it’s almost 2 o’clock. It totally slipped my mind! I have to go now, Mom!
W: Maybe you should do something to help you
remember your plans.
M: You’re right. I’ll start writing them on my calendar.

M: Honey, are you ready to leave for Jenny’s soccer game?
W: Yeah, let’s go. It’s not raining outside, is it?
M: Not now. But the weather forecast said it might rain later. Did you put the umbrellas in the car?
W: No, I didn’t. I packed the raincoats instead.

M: Hi, Pam. What are you up to?
W: I’m cleaning out my email inbox. I have so many unnecessary emails.
M: I know what you mean. I have so many spam and thank-you emails. But it’s so time-consuming to delete them, so I just leave them.
W: You should really delete them. They can be bad for the environment.
M: Really? I’ve never heard that.
W: I read an article on the negative effect of emails on the environment.
M: I don’t understand how they can be harmful. They’re digital.
W: Emails are transmitted over the Internet and stored in countless servers around the world.
M: Now I get it! The servers consume vast amounts of electricity, right?
W: Yes. Most electricity needed to run and cool the servers is generated by fossil fuels.
M: Then that leads to a lot of carbon emissions.
W: That’s right. That’s why I’m tidying my inbox.
M: From now on, I’ll start deleting unimportant emails, too.

M: Hi, Janelle. Have you decided on which special lecture you’re going to attend at the science conference?
W: I haven’t decided yet. Did you choose yet?
M: Yeah. I signed up for “A.I. with Emotions” by Professor Adams.
W: What made you choose that lecture?
M: Well, A.I. is already a big part of everyday life, and they are developing ways for A.I. to understand our feelings.
W: Do you really think A.I. will be able to read human
emotions?
M: To some degree. I read some articles on it. Computers can detect emotions by analyzing things like facial expressions and voice patterns.
W: They’re so smart. I wonder what uses an emotional
A.I. has.
M: A nurse robot provides older patients with emotional support, and a teaching robot adapts learning tasks to kids’ emotions.
W: Sounds really interesting! I think emotional A.I. can be a good topic for my new research.
M: Then, signing up for Professor Adams’ lecture might be a good start for you.
W: Okay, I’ll join you. I’m sure it’ll be of great help for me.

W: Jessie and Mark are classmates and close friends. This semester, they’re taking a writing class together. Jessie always receives As and positive comments from their teacher on her assignments. However, even though Mark works hard on his assignments, he doesn’t receive very high grades on them. Therefore, he’s pretty depressed and asks Jessie for advice. When she reads over Mark’s writing, she notices that his ideas are well connected and supported, but he makes a lot of typing mistakes and grammatical errors. So, Jessie wants to tell Mark that he should reread what he writes to check for errors before submitting it. In this case, what would Jessie most likely say to Mark?
Jessie: You should double-check your writing before turning it in.

M: Welcome back to our show, everyone. I’m Michael Dawson. Since ancient times, hair color has been a consistent beauty aspect. While experimenting with my hair color, I found commonly used hair dyes are full of chemicals that can really damage hair. This was why I started wondering if there were healthier alternatives. And I found some, including ones using natural ingredients found in most people’s kitchens. For example, using carrot juice can give your hair a reddish-orange tint. Depending on the color of your hair, the tint can last for a few weeks. And if you want to lighten your hair naturally, you can use chamomile tea. It’s especially effective for people with blonde hair. Lemon juice can also be used to help you lighten up your hair and make it look shinier because it breaks down the color in hair. Or you may want to dye your hair darker. Then use a cup of coffee. Dark-roasted coffee may even cover up some gray hair. It may take some time and experimentation to get the color you’re looking for with these ingredients, but at least you can feel
relieved that you won’t be damaging your hair in the process.
