안녕하십니까, 대한 고등학교 동문 여러분!

 

I can't believe it's already been fifteen years since we graduated.

우리가 졸업 한지 벌써 15년 이나 지났다니 믿기지가 않는군요.

 

I'm curious about how you all are doing these days.

다들 요즘 어떻게 지내고 계신지 매우 궁금하네요.

 

Since we've been through huge worldwide changes caused by the Fourth Industrial Revolution, especially in terms of our jobs, I want to introduce four friends who are working in diverse fields ― Sumi, Wooju, Juyoung, and Jinu.

우리가 특히나 직업적인 면에서 제 4차 산업혁명으로 인한 전 세계적으로 거대한 변화를 경험했기 때문에, 다양한 분야에서 활약하고 있는 수미, 우주, 주영, 그리고 진우 이상 네 명의 동문들을 소개하려 합니다.

 

They are doing indispensable work for all of us who are living in the era of technology.

이 동문들은 기술의 시대에 살고 있는 우리 모두를 위해 없어선 안 되는 일들을 하고 있다고 합니다.

 

Let's meet them and find out what their jobs are like in this month's alumni newsletter.

이달의 동문회지에서 그들을 만나 그들의 직업이 어떤 것들인지 알아봅시다.

 

Sumi: Hi, everyone.

수미: 여러분 안녕하세요?

 

I've been working as an autonomous train programmer for five years now.

저는 자율 주행 기차 프로그래머로 5년 째 일하고 있어요.

 

Actually, I was a train conductor for the first five years.

사실 저는 처음 5년 동안은 철도 승무원이었습니다.

 

However, a single conference changed my whole perspective.

그러나 단 한 번의 세미나가 저의 시각을 완전히 바꿔버렸어요.

 

It was the annual conference of the World Economic Forum in 2025, where a famous futurist talked about the Fourth Industrial Revolution and its consequences.

그것은 2025년에 열린 세계 경제 포럼의 연례 회의였는데 유명한 미래학자가 제 4차 산업혁명과 그것의 결과에 대해 강연을 했습니다.

 

I heard that there would no longer be any type of drivers in the near future, including train conductors, because of autonomous driving systems.

저는 자율 주행 시스템 때문에 가까운 미래에는 철도 승무원을 포함한 어떤 종류의 기관사나 운전자도 남지 않을 것이라는 말을 들었죠.

 

So I boldly quit my job and started studying autonomous train driving programs.

그래서 저는 대담하게 제 일을 그만 뒀고, 기차 자율 주행 시스템에 관한 공부를 시작했습니다.

 

Very soon, there were massive numbers of unemployed workers in the train industry.

얼마 지나지 않아, 기차 산업 현장에는 많은 실직자가 발생했습니다.

 

If I hadn't studied autonomous programs, I might still be searching for a job.

만약 제가 자율 주행 시스템을 공부하지 않았었다면 지금까지도 일자리를 찾고 있을지도 몰라요.

 

I was lucky that I was able to forecast the future correctly.

미래를 올바로 예측할 수 있어 운이 좋았었죠.

 

My team recently had to reprogram the route of the Trans-Asian Railroad since it was newly connected to the railroad in Korea.

최근 제 팀은 아시아 횡단 철도가 한국 철로와 새로 연결되었기 때문에 경로를 다시 프로그래밍 해야 했습니다.

 

You won't believe how easy it is now to get to countries that we used to think were so far away.

우리가 멀리 떨어져있다고 생각하던 나라들에 이제는 얼마나 쉽게 도착할 수 있는지를 믿을 수 없을 거예요.

 

It's amazing that not only can we take the train to get to all the beautiful places across Korea but also to those in Europe and Russia.

한국 전역의 아름다운 곳들을 기차로 갈 수 있는 것뿐 아니라 유럽과 러시아의 아름다운 곳들 또한 기차로 갈 수 있다는 것이 놀랍죠.

 

Wooju: I am currently working as a United Nations officer.

우주: 저는 현재 유엔 사무관으로 근무하고 있습니다.

 

My job is to promote the construction of smog-free buildings in big cities that work as large air purifiers utilizing patented ozone-free ion technology.

제 일은 특허 받은 오존이 없는 이온 기술을 이용해 큰 도시들에 대형 공기청정기의 역할을 하는, 스모그가 발생하지 않는 건물의 건설을 장려하는 것입니다.

 

When a building is made smog-free, it sucks in dirty air and filters it before it is released through the building's vents.

건물이 스모그를 배출하지 않도록 건설되면, 그 건물은 더러운 공기를 빨아들이고 이것을 건물 통풍구를 통해 다시 배출하기 전에 깨끗하게 여과합니다.

 

This project started in 2020 and by next winter, 90 percent of all big cities will have developed the skills to be able to transform their buildings into smog-free ones.

이 프로젝트는 2020년에 시작했고, 내년 겨울이면 전 세계 90%의 대도시가 건물이 스모그가 배출되지 않게끔 바꿀 수 있는 기술을 개발하게 될 것입니다.

 

More than 180 countries are involved in the project and they all agree on how important it is to protect our environment in the face of rapid technology development.

180개 이상의 국가들이 이 프로젝트에 참여하고 있고, 그들은 모두 빠른 기술 개발에 직면해 우리의 환경을 보호하는 것이 얼마나 중요한지에 대해 동의하고 있습니다.

 

Last year, I had the chance to visit cities in India and China to see how their air quality had improved.

작년에, 저는 인도와 중국의 공기 질이 얼마나 향상되었는지 알아보고자 두 도시를 방문할 기회를 가졌습니다.

 

I was astonished to find that the cities where air pollution levels used to be much higher than what's considered healthy by the World Health Organization, were no longer above these levels.

저는 대기 오염 수준이 세계보건기구의 권장 수준보다 휠씬 높았던 도시들이 더 이상 그렇지 않다는 것을 발견하고 놀랐습니다.

 

I felt a real sense of fulfillment in my job when I heard that the number of patients with respiratory diseases is now much lower than a few years earlier.

호흡기 질환을 앓고 있는 환자의 수가 몇 년 전보다 훨씬 적어졌다는 소식을 들었을 때 저는 제 일에 진정한 성취감을 느꼈지요.

 

I don't want to imagine what might have been happening now to the earth's atmosphere if the UN had not taken any actions against air pollution.

만약 유엔이 대기 오염에 대해 아무런 조치를 취하지 않았었다면, 현재 지구 대기권에서 무슨 일이 일어나고 있었을지 상상하고 싶지도 않습니다.

 

It would have been a disaster.

그것은 재앙이었을 것입니다.

 

Juyoung: I'm so glad to have the opportunity to describe to my fellow alumni what I am currently working on.

주영: 현재 제가 작업하고 있는 것을 우리 동문들에게 소개할 수 있는 기회를 갖게 되어 매우 기쁩니다.

 

As a personalized AI robot engineer, I design and make medical service robots.

맞춤형 인공지능 로봇 기술자로서 저는 의료 서비스 로봇을 설계하고 만듭니다.

 

AI has been quite a familiar subject for the past twenty years; however, what it is capable of now is beyond what we ever imagined.

인공지능은 지난 20년 동안 꽤 친숙해진 주제이지만, 현재 그것으로 무엇을 할 수 있는지는 우리가 상상했던 것 그 이상입니다.

 

By utilizing big data and machine learning, medical AI is reshaping the world we live in and our relationships with technology.

빅데이터와 기계 학습의 원리를 이용함으로써 의료용 인공지능은 우리가 살고 있는 세계와 우리의 관계들을 다시 정립하고 있습니다.

 

Patients with mild illnesses don't have to visit doctors because their personalized medical service robots know all of their histories and can make recommendations about treatments.

경미한 질환을 가지고 있는 환자들은 그들의 개인 의료용 로봇이 그들의 병력을 알고 있고, 또 치료 방법을 추천할 수 있기 때문에 의사를 방문할 필요가 없습니다.

 

I'm trying my best to widen the use of such robots at a relatively low cost.

저는 이러한 로봇들을 상대적으로 저렴한 가격에 상용화 할 수 있도록 최선을 다하고 있습니다.

 

I hope that by 2040, all households will have acquired their own medical robots.

2040년에는 모든 가정들이 그들만의 의료용 로봇을 가질 수 있기를 희망합니다.

 

Also, I give lectures to help different countries develop their own skills in building such robots.

또한 저는 다른 다른 나라들이 이러한 로봇들을 만드는 그들만의 기술을 개발할 수 있도록 강연을 하기도 합니다.

 

I have been invited to give several forums by the largest medical center in London, and when I visit London this time, I will have been there five times.

몇 번의 포럼을 개최하기 위해 런던에 있는 가장 규모가 큰 의료 시설에 초청 받아 런던을 방문하는 것이 이번으로 다섯 번째입니다.

 

Sometimes it's tough for me having to leap from one place to another every weekend, but whenever I see my robots helping to cure people who are ill, I am really humbled.

때때로 매 주말마다 여기 저기 날아다니는 것이 힘들기도 하지만 저의 로봇들이 아픈 사람들을 치료하는 것을 볼 때마다 정말로 겸허해집니다.

 

I find my job completely rewarding.

저는 제 직업이 진정 보람 있다는 것을 알게 됩니다.

 

Jinu: I am working as a smart apparel designer.

진우: 저는 스마트 의류 디자이너로 일하고 있습니다.

 

Fashion designers had a hard time for a while after the invention of 3D printers, which allow people to print out their own clothes easily.

패션 디자이너들은 3D 프린터의 개발 이후 한동안 힘든 시기를 겪었는데, 3D 프린터의 개발이 사람들로 하여금 그들 자신만의 옷을 쉽게 만들어 입을 수 있게 했기 때문이죠.

 

It was indispensable for us to combine fashion and technology.

저희에게 패션과 기술을 접목시키는 일은 필수적인 것이었습니다.

 

I couldn't have done that if it hadn't been for the popularization of wearable Internet of Things (IoT) items.

입을 수 있는 사물 인터넷 제품들의 상용화가 없었다면 저는 이 일을 해내지 못했을 것입니다.

 

Inspired by IoT goods, I decided to design everyday clothes with biometric features, which means they can measure your heart rate and breathing rate, and also can measure how much sleep you are getting and how much stress you are under.

저는 사물 인터넷 물건들에서 영감을 얻은 뒤에, 생체정보기술이 탑재된 일상복들을 디자인하기로 마음먹었는데, 이 옷들은 여러분의 심장박동 수와 호흡, 그리고 여러분이 얼마나 숙면을 취하는지, 스트레스를 얼마나 받고 있는지 등을 측정해 줄 수 있답니다.

 

I knew there were a few designers who were trying to design smart athletic wear, but none of them had expanded the idea of smart function to fashionable everyday clothes.

스마트 운동복을 만들려 하는 몇몇 디자이너들이 있다는 것은 알았지만 그 중 누구도 스마트 기술의 개념을 유행을 따르는 일상복에까지 확장하지는 않았죠.

 

After a long process of trial and error, I finally launched my own brand and it led me to win the Best New Designer award last year.

시행착오의 긴 과정 끝에 마침내 저는 저만의 브랜드를 출시했고, 그것은 저를 작년의 최고 신인 디자이너 상으로 이끌어 주었습니다.

 

These days I've been busy designing this year's new smart apparel collection.

요즈음 저는 올해의 새로운 스마트 의류 컬렉션을 디자인하느라 바쁘답니다.

 

I feel very fortunate as a fashion designer because if it hadn't been for the development of Internet technology, fashion trends couldn't be what they are today.

인터넷 기술의 발달이 아니었다면 패션업계의 경향은 오늘날에 이르지 않았을 것이기에 패션디자이너로서 매우 운이 좋은 것 같습니다.

 

I think we are living in an era of amazing technologies.

제 생각에 우리는 놀라운 기술의 시대에 살고 있답니다.
