우리의 전통 음식에 대한 재미있는 이야기들이 많이 있다.

우리 음식의 재미있는 역사 속으로 들어가 보자.

Tangpyeongchae

탕평채

One day, King Yeongjo was having dinner with his officials and offered them something special.

어느 날, 영조가 그의 신하들과 저녁을 먹다가 그들에게 특별한 무언가를 권했다.

It was a dish with four colorful ingredients.

그것은 네 가지의 다채로운 재료로 만든 음식이었다.

Each ingredient symbolized a different political party.

각 재료는 서로 다른 당파를 상징했다.

Yeongjo wanted to say that the four parties should work in harmony like this dish.

영조는 이 음식처럼 네 당파가 화합을 이루어 일해야 한다는 것을 말하고 싶었다.

This dish was called tangpyeongchae.

이 음식은 탕평채라고 불렸다.

The name came from Yeongjo’s policy tangpyeongchaek.

그 이름은 영조의 정책인 탕평책에서 왔다.

Sinseollo

신선로

In the time of King Yeonsan, there was a scholar who was famous for his honesty.

연산군 시대에 정직하기로 유명한 한 학자가 있었다.

When the king did something wrong, the scholar was never afraid of telling him so.

왕이 무언가를 잘못하면, 그 학자는 왕에게 그렇게 말하는 것을 절대 두려워하지 않았다.

However, the king never listened to him.

그러나 왕은 그의 말에 전혀 귀 기울이지 않았다.

The scholar was so disappointed that he went to live on a mountain.

학자는 너무 실망하여 산속으로 살러 들어갔다.

While he lived there by himself, he mainly ate vegetables.

그곳에서 혼자 사는 동안, 그는 주로 채소를 먹었다.

He made a special pot to cook many different vegetables together.

그는 여러 다양한 채소들을 함께 요리하기 위해 특별한 솥을 만들었다.

People called this pot and the food in it sinseollo.

사람들은 이 솥과 그 안의 음식을 신선로라고 불렀다.

That is because the scholar lived like a sinseon, an imaginary person who lives alone in nature.

그것은 그 학자가 마치 자연 속에 홀로 사는 상상의 인물인 신선처럼 살았기 때문이다.

Songpyeon

송편

It was the time of the last king of Baekje.

백제의 마지막 왕 때였다.

One day, the king and his servants found a strange turtle.

어느 날, 왕과 신하들은 이상한 거북을 한 마리 발견했다.

Something was written on its back.

그 거북의 등에 무언가가 쓰여 있었다.

It said, “Baekje is like a full moon, but Silla is like a half moon.”

그것은 “백제는 보름달과 같지만 신라는 반달과 같다.”였다.

The king asked a fortune teller, “What does this mean?”

왕은 점술가에게 “이게 무슨 뜻인가?”라고 물었다.

The fortune teller answered, “A full moon will soon become smaller.

점술가는 “보름달은 곧 작아질 것입니다.

On the other hand, a half moon will grow bigger and become a full moon.”

반면에, 반달은 점점 커져서 보름달이 될 것입니다.”라고 답했다.

The king became worried about his kingdom.

왕은 자신의 왕국이 걱정되었다.

However, people of Silla were very happy to learn this and made rice cakes in the shape of a half moon.

그러나 신라 사람들은 이것을 알고 매우 기뻐하며 반달 모양의 떡을 만들었다.

Since then, people have enjoyed these half-moon shaped rice cakes, songpyeon.

그 후로 사람들은 이 반달 모양의 떡인 송편을 즐겨 먹고 있다.
