The King of Architecture in Gyeongseong

경성의 건축왕

 

* Have you been to Bukchon?

북촌에 가 본 적이 있는가?

 

There is a beautiful hanok village in Bukchon.

북촌에는 아름다운 한옥 마을이 있다.

 

It is popular with tourists who want to see Korea's past.

그곳은 한국의 과거를 보고 싶어 하는 관광객들에게 인기가 있다.

 

However, not many people know that Bukchon was created through one man's efforts.

그러나 북촌이 한 사람의 노력으로 만들어졌다는 것을 아는 사람은 많지 않다.

 

That man was Jeong Segwon, known as the King of Architecture in Gyeongseong.

그 사람은 경성의 건축왕으로 알려진 정세권이었다.

 

* Jeong Segwon was a businessman who founded Geonyangsa in 1920.

정세권은 1920년에 건양사를 설립한 사업가였다.

 

At that time, Korea was ruled by Japan, and the Japanese were changing Gyeongseong to fit their taste.

그 당시 한국은 일본의 지배를 받았고, 일본인들은 경성을 자신들의 취향에 맞게 바꾸고 있었다.

 

Many Japanese moving into Gyeongseong were building Japanese or Western houses.

경성으로 이주한 많은 일본인들은 일본식이나 서양식 가옥을 짓고 있었다.

 

Jeong Segwon wanted to protect the hanok and help the suffering people.

정세권은 한옥을 지키고, 고통 받는 사람들을 돕기를 원했다.

 

He said, "People are power. We Joseon people should keep Jongno and not let the Japanese set foot here."

“사람이 힘이다. 우리 조선 사람들은 종로를 지켜야 하며, 일본인들이 이곳에 발을 붙이지 못하게 해야 한다.”라고 그는 말했다.

 

He bought the land between Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung.

그는 경복궁과 창덕궁 사이에 땅을 샀다.

 

There he built small, modern hanoks for the people.

그곳에 그는 사람들을 위해 소규모 현대식 한옥을 지었다.

 

Through his efforts, we now have Bukchon filled with its beautiful hanoks.

그의 노력으로, 현재 북촌은 아름다운 한옥으로 가득 차 있다.

 

* Jeong Segwon helped the independence movement in many ways.

정세권은 여러 방법으로 독립운동을 도왔다.

 

For example, he built the office building for the Joseon Language Society and supported its efforts to keep the Joseon language alive.

예를 들어, 그는 조선어 학회를 위한 회관을 지었고, 조선어를 지키려는 그들의 노력을 지원했다.

 

When the Joseon Language Affair happened, he was caught by the police and suffered a lot.

조선어 학회 사건이 일어났을 때, 그는 경찰에 잡혀 많은 고통을 겪었다.

 

Japanese officials pressed him to build Japanese houses.

일본 관리들은 그에게 일본식 가옥을 지으라고 압박했다.

 

He said, "I don't know how to build Japanese houses."

An official said, "You know how to build hanoks, so you can build Japanese houses, too."

But he did not do what the Japanese told him to do.

The cost was high.

His business fell off, and he lost his property.

However, in part, thanks to Jeong Segwon, the traditions of Korea still live with us today.
