The History of Classical Concert Manners

클래식 콘서트 예절의 역사

 

* Imagine yourself at a classical music concert.

클래식 음악 콘서트에 있는 자신을 상상해 보아라.

 

The orchestra starts to play one of Mozart's piano concertos.

오케스트라는 모차르트의 피아노 협주곡들 중 하나를 연주하기 시작한다.

 

The concert hall is dark and silent.

콘서트홀은 어둡고 조용하다.

 

Nobody makes a sound.

아무도 소리를 내지 않는다.

 

Everybody looks serious.

모두가 진지하게 보인다.

 

The audiences only clap after the concerto finishes.

관객은 협주곡이 끝난 후에만 박수를 친다.

 

This is a familiar scene at concerts today.

이것이 오늘날 콘서트에서 익숙한 장면이다.

 

* Let's go back in time and take a look at one of Mozart's concerts in the 18th century.

과거로 거슬러 올라가서 18세기 모차르트의 콘서트 중 하나를 살펴보자.

 

You are in a bright hall inside a nobleman's house.

당신은 한 귀족 집안의 밝은 홀에 있다.

 

Mozart is playing the piano.

모차르트는 피아노를 연주하고 있다.

 

Surprisingly, however, the audiences are eating, drinking, and talking freely.

그러나, 놀랍게도 관객들은 먹고 마시고 자유롭게 이야기하고 있다.

 

They whistle and clap at any time.

그들은 아무 때나 휘파람을 불고 박수를 친다.

 

You are shocked by their bad manners, but Mozart himself would be surprised by today's quiet audiences.

당신은 그들의 좋지 않은 매너에 충격을 받지만 모차르트 자신은 오늘날의 조용한 관객들에게 놀랄지도 모른다.

 

Concerts in Mozart's time were mostly social events.

모차르트 시대의 콘서트는 주로 사교적 행사였다.

 

They were good places to meet people.

Noise was just part of the concert.

* Today's quiet concerts began in the 19th century when many big concert halls were built.

More people, not just noblemen, went to concerts.

Artists were no longer dependent on noblemen for money.

The artists had more power over their works and started to use their increased power.

예술가들은 자신들의 작품에 더 힘을 가졌고 그들의 증가된 힘을 사용했다.

 

For example, Wagner blamed the audience for making noise.

예를 들어 바그너는 소음을 낸다는 것 때문에 관객을 비난했다.

 

After some time, a no clapping-between-movements rule appeared.

얼마 후에 ‘악장 사이 박수 금지 규칙’이 생겼다.

 

* As a result, here we are today, very quiet and serious.

그 결과, 여기 우리는 오늘날 아주 조용하고 진지하다.

 

We do not know what concerts will look like in the future because manners change with time.

예절은 시간에 따라 바뀌기 때문에 우리는 콘서트가 미래에 어떨지 모른다.

 

For now, however, if you want to enjoy classical music concerts, just remember this:

Enjoy the music, but do not disturb those around you.
