할머니의 야구 꿈

 

 우리 할머니 Helen은 인디애나주 사우스 벤드 근처 작은 마을에 있는 식당의 요리사셨다. 할머니는 더 이상 일을 하지 않지만 여전히 맛있는 음식을 즐겨 만드시고, 나는 그 음식들을 무척 좋아한다. 음식은 우리를 연결하는 많은 것 가운데 하나이다. 하지만 우리를 가장 강하게 연결하는 것은 바로 야구이다.

 

 주말마다 할머니 댁에 가면, 할머니는 종종 과거 1940년대의 야구 경기에 관해 흥미로운 이야기를 내게 들려주신다. 그녀는 야구를 무척 좋아했던 게 분명하다. 나는 이 이야기들을 몇 번이고 듣는다. 그녀는 항상 말씀하신다. “네가 원하는 것을 이루려 노력하렴, Sarah. 새로운 것이나 도전적인 것을 시도해 보기를 두려워하지 말거라. 실패하는 것을 부끄러워하지 마라.”

 

 

 1943년, 전미여자프로야구리그가 창립되었다. 미국의 청년 중 많은 수가 제2차 세계대전에 참전해 있었기 때문에 이 리그가 야구 팬들을 위해 만들어졌다.

 

 Helen 할머니는 지역 심사가 바로 사우스 벤드에서 있을 거라고 들었다. 그녀는 “야구 팀에 들어가서 고향을 위해 결승전까지 진출한다는 건 어떤 기분일까?”라며 궁금해했다. 그녀는 Helen Baker라는 이름이 포함된 큰 현수막이 야구장에 걸려 있는 것을 상상했다.

 하지만 하루하루 갈수록, Helen 할머니는 심사에 떨어질까 봐 걱정되었다. 그녀는 또한 시카고까지 혼자 여행하는 것이 걱정되었는데, 시카고는 집에서 멀리 떨어진 곳이었다. 본심사가 있는 날이 되었을 때, 그녀는 너무 두려워서 갈 수 없었다.

 MY GRANDMOTHER'S BASEBALL DREAMS

 

 

 My grandmother Helen used to be a cook in a restaurant in a small town near South Bend, Indiana. She does not work anymore, but she still enjoys making delicious food, which I love so much. Food is one of the many things that connect us. What connects us most strongly, however, is baseball.

 

 When I visit her on weekends, my grandmother often tells me exciting stories about playing baseball back in the 1940s. She must have loved the sport very much. I listen to these stories over and over. She always says, “Go after what you want, Sarah. Don‘t be afraid of trying something new or challenging. Don’t be ashamed of failing.”

 

 

 In 1943, the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League was founded. This league was created for baseball fans because many of America’s young men were fighting in World War Ⅱ.

 

 Helen was told that there would be local tryouts right in South Bend. She wondered, “What would it be like to be on a baseball team and to make it to the finals for my hometown?” She imagined a large banner hanging at the baseball field which included the name Helen Baker.

 

 On the day of the tryouts, all the rules were explained by an old man in a suit, who sounded very serious and unkind. She thought that wearing a suit in the hot sun might have made him impatient. On that day, Helen played baseball for hours with many other young women. She was excited to go after her baseball dreams!

 

 About a week later, Helen found a letter in the mailbox. It was from people who worked for the girls’ baseball league in Chicago. It read that she had been invited to the league’s main tryouts in Chicago!

 

 

 As the days went by, however, Helen became worried that she might fail. She also became worried about traveling alone to Chicago, which was far away from home. When the day of the main tryouts came, she was too afraid to go.

 

 My grandmother has spent the rest of her life regretting her decision. When she watches a baseball game on TV, she often says, “I should have gone to Chicago. You know, all your dreams are worth chasing, even if you catch only a few of them. Never miss an opportunity.”
