M: Good morning, Julie. How was your weekend?
W: It was wonderful. I went to an event called Stargazing Night with my 7-year-old son.
M: Oh, so you went outdoors to look up at stars. Your son must have had a great time.
W: Yes. And I think it helped my son become familiar with mathematical concepts.
M: Interesting! How does it do that?
W: By counting the stars together, my son had a chance to practice counting to high numbers.
M: Ah, that makes sense.
W: Also, he enjoyed identifying shapes and tracing patterns that stars form together.
M: Sounds like you had a magical and mathematical night!
W: Absolutely. I think looking at stars is a good way for kids to get used to mathematical concepts.
M: Maybe I should take my daughter to the event next time.

W: Honey, I’m worried that Jessie spends too much time on the Internet.
M: I know she’s on it quite a bit, but it’s mainly for her homework.
W: Well, what I’m really concerned about is the amount of fast food ads that she’s exposed to.
M: What do you mean?
W: I read an article that as children are using digital devices more and more, they’re exposed to more fast food ads.
M: That’s true. And fast food marketers target children, too.
W: I know! It’s terrible. Fatty and sugary foods are so bad for anyone’s health, but especially for children.
M: Yes. Children are still developing and still learning about nutrition. They can be easily persuaded by ads, too.
W: They are. That’s why I think we need to regulate online fast food ads targeting children.
M: I totally agree with you. Do you think all fast food ads targeting children should be banned?
W: Yes, I believe they should be banned from all digital media.
M: I agree one hundred percent.

W: Max, did you hear about the recent earthquake in California?
M: Yeah. Fortunately the damage was minimal.
W: Right. Listening to the news, I thought of what would happen if I experienced an emergency. I would probably just panic since I don’t know what to do.
M: Well, you should prepare a survival backpack at home in case of an emergency. I have one.
W: A survival backpack?
M: Yes. It’s a backpack with basic supplies for an unpredictable emergency or disaster like an earthquake or flood.
W: Wow, that’s a great idea. So what supplies did you put in it?
M: Some bottles of water, canned food items, a flashlight, and a first aid kit.
W: Hmm, I should do that, too.
M: For sure. It’s better to be safe than sorry. Keeping an emergency backpack at home helps protect your family in an emergency.
W: Right. I’ll make one this weekend.

W: William, you seem upset. Is everything okay? M: I’m upset, Mom. Judy used my laptop again. W: Did she use it without your permission?
M: Yes. And I’ve told her she can’t use it unless she asks me.
W: I know it’s frustrating. Why don’t you tell her not to do it again?
M: I think it’s useless. I don’t even want to talk to her.
W: But if you just stay angry and never talk to her, you’ll never resolve anything.
M: Sure, but I’m just so upset now.
W: I know how you feel now, but I think it’s important you control your emotions to solve problems with others.
M: Hmm. Okay, Mom. I’ll talk to Judy after I calm
down.
W: Great. I’m sure it’ll work out.
04
M: Anna, where are you going? Have you finished your homework?
W: Yeah, I just finished. I’m going to take Cooper out for a walk.
M: Sounds good. Just don’t forget to put a leash on him.
W: Okay. I know that’s the rule, but is it really necessary for Cooper? He’s just a small puppy.
M: He’s small but some people may be scared of him.
W: I feel bad because I know he’d like to run around and play in the park.
M: I know, but the park is always crowded with people, and you need to consider them.
W: I understand. I’ll keep him on the leash the whole time.
M: Oh, and Anna. Take a plastic bag and don’t forget to clean up after him.
W: I already have one.
M: Great. Pet owners should be careful to respect others when they walk their pets.
W: All right. Well, I’ll be back in about an hour. M: Okay, Anna. Have a pleasant walk with Cooper. W: Thanks, Dad.
05
W: Anthony, is something bothering you? You’ve been quiet today.
M: I just keep thinking about Jim, one of my coworkers.
W: Why? What’s wrong?
M: He always asks me to help him even when I’m busy with my own work.
W: Just tell him you can’t.
M: But I want to be helpful.
W: You know, saying no to helping someone doesn’t make you a bad person. What if you can’t get your work done on time because you spend time helping him?
M: I know. But I’m afraid I’ll hurt him if I refuse to help him.
W: His work is his responsibility. You can help him when you have extra time after completing your own work. Or else, you should be able to say no.
M: Okay. I’ll try and do that.
06
M: Hi, Claire. Are you all right? You seem distracted by something.
W: Hi, Brandon. I’m concerned about my son, Jason.
M: What’s wrong?
W: I want him to enjoy reading, but he doesn’t like it at all.
M: My son was the same a couple years ago. But then I introduced him to the newspaper. He loves reading now.
W: Really? How did you do that?
M: I subscribed to a science newspaper. Since my son loves science, every day I asked him to cut out an article and read it. It was kind of like a game.
W: How so?
M: First, I’d have him choose an article that he’d like to read. Then I told him to find the main topic.
W: Good idea. And he liked it?
M: Yeah. Since then, he began to like reading.
W: That’s great. I’ll have him read a story about something that interests him.
