개 한마리가 농장뜰에서 자고 있었다. 그 때 늑대가 달려들어 덮쳤다. 개가 살려달라고 애원하며 말했다. "제발 늑대씨, 내가 얼마나 말랐는지, 그리고 얼마나 형편없는 식사가 될것인지 봐라. 며칠만 기다리시면, 주인님이 잔치를 열어주실 거야. 돈 많은 고깃덩어리는 모두 내 것이 될 것이다. 나는 배부르고 살이 찔거야. 그러면 네가 나를 먹을 수 있는 좋은 때가 될 것이야.' 늑대는 이게 일리있는 말이라 생각하고 떠났어요. 얼마 후 그는 농장으로 돌아왔고, 마구간 지붕 위에 그가 닿지 않는 곳에 개가 있었다. "내려오너라."라고 늑대가 외쳤다. "너는 우리의 약속을 기억하지 못하나?" 그러나 개가 말하였다. "사랑하는 나의 친구여, 네가 땅바닥에 있는 나를 다시 잡는다면, 어떤 잔치도 기다리지 마라.

A Dog was asleep in the sun in a farmyard when a Wolf pounced on him. Pleading for his life, the Dog said, "Please Wolf, see how thin I am and what a poor meal I would be now. If you will wait a few days, my master is giving a feast. All the rich scraps and pickings will be mine. I shall be full and fat and then will be a good time for you to eat me." The Wolf thought this made sense, and he left. Some time afterward he came back to the farm, and there was the Dog, out of his reach on the stable roof. "Come down," the Wolf called, "don't you remember our agreement?" But the Dog said, "My dear friend, if you ever catch me on the ground again, don't wait for any feast."
