A Jackdaw, as conceited as a Jackdaw can be, picked up some peacock feathers which the original owners had shed, stuck them among his own, and, ignoring his old friends, went among a flock of the more beautiful Peacocks. The Peacocks immediately attacked the foolish Jackdaw, ripped off his borrowed feathers, and drove him away with sharp pecks from their beaks. The unlucky Jackdaw, saddened, went back to his old friends as if he had never left. But, remembering how he had behaved, the other Jackdaws no longer wanted him as a friend. One of them said: "If you had been happy with how nature made you, you would not have been attacked by your betters and despised by your equals."
Fine feathers do not make fine birds.
