The Hardest Decision

가장 힘든 결정

 

In 1985, Joe Simpson (25 years old) and Simon Yates (21 years old) were about to be the first people to get to the top of the impressive west face of Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes.

1985년, Joe Simpson(25세)과 Simon Yates(21세)는 페루 안데스 Siula Grande의 장엄함을 느끼게 하는 서쪽 사면 정상에 오르는 최초의 사람들이 되기 직전이었다.

 

Although it took a lot longer than they expected due to unpredictable weather and rough ice cliffs, they successfully made it to the top on the fourth day of their journey.

예측 불가능한 날씨와 거친 빙벽 때문에 생각했던 것보다 훨씬 더 오래 걸리긴 했지만 그들은 여정의 넷째 날에 성공적으로 정상에 도달했다.

 

However, as soon as Joe and Simon had reached the summit, Simon saw another snow storm coming from the east.

그러나 Joe와 Simon이 정상에 도달하자마자, Simon은 동쪽에서 또 다른 눈보라가 몰아쳐오는 것을 보았다.

 

Moreover, storm clouds were quickly approaching the north ridge as the two men started heading down the mountain.

The climbers, who were not used to dealing with snow storms, decided to descend in zero visibility.

Whenever they faced life-threatening situations on their climb, they were able to save each other from deadly accidents despite the bad weather.

On the fifth day, the climbers had two options: climbing straight down the ice cliffs or taking a detour.

다섯째 날, 두 등반가들은 빙벽을 따라 곧장 내려가든지 아니면 우회하는 두 가지 선택지를 가지게 되었다.

 

Joe thought there wouldn't be much of a difference between the two, so he decided to take the ice cliffs.

Joe는 두 가지 선택지 사이에 큰 차이가 없을 것이라고 생각했고, 그래서 빙벽을 택하기로 결심했다.

 

He was wrong.

그가 틀렸다.

 

The ice cliffs were soft, and Joe slipped and had a terrible fall.

The pain was sharp, and he soon realized that his right leg was broken.

He tied Joe to himself using a rope and lowered Joe down 45 meters at a time while anchoring himself onto the mountain above.

자신의 몸을 위쪽 산에 단단히 고정시킨 채 그는 밧줄을 이용해 Joe를 자신에게 묶었고 한번에 45미터씩 Joe를 아래로 내렸다.

 

Then, he climbed down to Joe.

그러고 나서 본인도 Joe가 있는 쪽으로 내려갔다.

 

He would do this over and over.

그는 이것을 계속 반복했다.

 

However, by the time he had done this multiple times, it was dark, and Simon unknowingly lowered Joe over a ledge directly above a crevasse!

그러나 그가 이것을 여러 번 반복했을 때쯤, 날은 어두워졌고, Simon은 자신도 모르는 사이에 Joe를 크레바스 바로 위에 있는 바위 턱에 내려놓았다!

 

There was nothing either of them could do.

Joe was dangling from the rope fastened around his waist with his head facing up.

The cold had won the battle against him long ago, and he couldn't feel anything.

He was exhausted.

All he wanted to do was to sleep.

He was ready to accept the death that was waiting for him.

He knew in his heart that there was little chance of him surviving no matter how hard Simon tried to save him.

After about an hour and a half, Simon could not hold Joe's weight anymore.

He thought to himself, "This is not going to work out.

Holding Joe any longer will only kill both of us."

Then, he remembered the knife in his bag with which he could lighten his burden.

"My arms are so sore.

"팔이 너무나 아프다.

 

I can't hold on much longer.

난 더 오래 버틸 수 없어.

 

But why should we both die?

Wouldn't it be better if I at least kept myself alive?

적어도 나라도 사는 것이 낫지 않을까?

 

I wouldn't even have to try too hard to cut the rope.

밧줄을 자르는 데 그렇게 큰 노력을 하지 않아도 될 수 있어.

 

Only a gentle touch would do to cut the rope in this freezing weather...“

단지 살짝 건드리는 것이면 이 얼어붙을 듯한 날씨에서 이 밧줄을 잘라내기에 충분할 거야..."

 

And just like that, Simon cut the rope and could no longer feel Joe's weight.

그리고 그렇게 Simon은 밧줄을 잘랐고 더이상 Joe의 무게를 느끼지 못했다.

 

Simon survived, but he couldn't feel anything.

Simon은 살아남았지만 아무 것도 느낄 수 없었다.

 

Instinctively, he dug a hole to avoid the cold.

본능적으로, 그는 추위를 피하려고 구덩이를 팠다.

 

The question "Who killed Joe?" echoed in his mind.

People were going to blame him for Joe's death.

The next day, he descended and saw the crevasse.

He called Joe's name only to find himself left with echoes filling the air.

He kept on walking down with the guilty feeling pressing down on his heart.

However, Joe was still alive.

When the rope was cut, Joe instantly fell 45 meters but luckily landed on a small ledge inside the crevasse.

밧줄이 잘렸을 때, Joe는 순식간에 45m 아래로 추락했지만 운 좋게도 크레바스 안의 작은 바위 턱 위에 떨어졌다.

 

Abandoned, he was in a hopeless situation in the frightening darkness.

버려진 채로, 그는 무시무시한 암흑 속에서 절망적인 상태에 있었다.

 

And yet he didn't give up.

He followed the sun and climbed to the top of a snowy hill, each step more painful than the last.

그는 햇빛을 따라 눈 덮인 언덕 꼭대기까지 올라갔는데, 한걸음 한걸음 갈수록 더 고통스러웠다.

 

Still, he endured and escaped from the crevasse to the welcome sight of blue sky.

그럼에도 그는 견뎌냈고 크레바스에서 파란 하늘이 반겨주는 곳으로 탈출했다.

 

For the rest of the day Joe crawled across the ice and snow very slowly.

그리고 그날 남은 시간에 얼음과 눈을 아주 천천히 기어갔다.

 

By the end of the seventh day, Joe was again afraid of dying alone, which only drove him onward.

7일째 되는 날의 끝자락에 Joe는 또다시 혼자 맞이하는 죽음에 대해 두려움을 가지게 되었지만 이는 오직 그를 더 앞을 향해 나아가도록 이끌었다.

 

At the point of exhaustion, he collapsed within a hundred meters of where other climbers were resting.

기진맥진해진 순간에 그는 다른 등반가들이 쉬고 있는 장소를 100m 남겨둔 채 쓰러지고 말았다.

 

Desperately, he called for his friend.

필사적으로 그는 그의 친구를 불렀다.

 

"Simon! Simon!" "Simon! Simon!"

Joe noticed someone walking towards him, just as he was passing out, but he couldn't keep himself awake.

Joe는 기절하기 직전에 자기를 향해 누군가가 걸어오는 것을 알아차렸지만, 의식을 차릴 수 없었다.

 

When Joe was conscious again for a brief moment, he called, "Simon?" "Yes?"

"I don't blame you. I'd have done the same."

As Simon stood speechless with surprise, Joe continued, "You saved my life, you know.

That night was long and cold, and I know you suffered a lot.

I would have trusted you no matter what choice you made.

나는 네가 어떤 선택을 했건 너를 믿었을 거야.

 

But you made the right one.

하지만 너는 맞는 선택을 내렸어.

 

Both of us would have frozen to death if it hadn't been for your choice.

너의 선택이 아니었더라면 우리 둘 다 얼어 죽었을 거야.

 

Thank you, Simon, for helping me down from the ridge.“

고마워 Simon, 나를 산등성이에서 내려가도록 도와줘서."

 

Simon said nothing, but Joe could hear him sob.

Simon은 아무 말도 하지 않았지만 Joe는 그가 흐느끼는 것을 들을 수 있었다.

 

Joe could only guess that Simon's heart must have been filled with guilt.

Joe는 Simon의 마음속은 죄책감으로 가득했을 것이라고 짐작할 수밖에 없었다.

 

Then, Joe fell into a long sleep.

그리고 Joe는 긴 잠에 들었다.

 

When they got back to England after their experience, many people came to see them.

그들이 이런 경험을 한 뒤 영국으로 돌아갔을 때, 많은 사람들이 그들을 보기 위해 찾아왔다.

 

"What was it that kept you alive?"

"당신을 살아 있게 한 것이 도대체 무엇인가요?“

 

"How did you escape the jaws of death?"

"어떻게 죽음의 문턱에서 탈출했나요?“

 

People asked Joe many questions, but for Simon, who was accused of betrayal, there was only one question:

사람들은 Joe에게 많은 질문을 했지만 배신으로 비난 받던 Simon에게는 오직 한 가지 질문뿐이었다:

 

"Why was it that you had to cut the rope?"

"도대체 왜 밧줄을 끊어야만 했나요?“

 

But when Joe answered instead of Simon, everyone became silent.

하지만 Joe가 Simon을 대신해 대답했을 때, 모두가 침묵했다.

 

He said, "I would have done the same.“

그는 말했다. "나라도 똑같이 했을 겁니다."
