Today my teacher announced that the class president election is coming up.

오늘 선생님이 학급회장 선거가 곧 열린다고 말씀하셨다.

 

Actually, never did I once consider being class president before.

사실 나는 이전에 단 한 번도 학급회장이 되는 걸 생각해 본 적이 없었다.

 

However, this year I started thinking about it because I want to do something to help me overcome my shyness.

그렇지만 올해는 수줍은 성격을 극복하기 위해 뭔가를 하고 싶어서 학급회장이 되는 것에 대해서 생각해보기 시작했다.

 

Therefore, I put my name on the list to run for class president.

그래서 나는 회장 선거 후보 명단에 내 이름을 올렸다.

 

Some of the other candidates are experienced and popular.

다른 후보들 중 몇몇은 경험이 있고 인기가 많았다.

 

So this probably won’t be easy.

그래서 이번 선거는 아마 쉽지 않을 것이다.

 

D-5: Preparing for my speech

I wondered how I could win the election,

나는 어떻게 하면 선거에서 당선될 수 있을지 궁금했다,

 

so I asked my older sister for help.

그래서 누나에게 도움을 청했다.

 

When she was in high school, she was elected class president a couple of times.

누나는 고등학교를 다닐 때 몇 번 학급 회장으로 뽑힌 적이 있었다.

 

She stressed that I should focus on my speech.

누나는 나에게 연설에 집중해야 한다고 강조했다.

 

Little did I know that she was good at giving speeches, but I trusted her.

나는 누나가 연설을 잘 하는지 잘 몰랐지만 누나를 믿었다.

 

She gave me some useful tips.

누나는 나에게 몇 가지 유용한 팁을 알려주었다.

 

Tip 1 Concentrate on your classmates’ needs, not yours.

팁1. 네가 원하는 것이 아닌 너의 학급 친구들이 원하는 것에 집중해라.

 

Choose two or three main problems.

두세 가지의 주요 문제를 고르라,

 

Then, offer reasonable ways to solve them.

그 문제들을 해결할 수 있는 합리적인 방법을 제시해라.

 

Tip 2 Keep your messages clear.

팁2. 너의 의견을 명확하게 전달해라.

 

Use short sentences and phrases such as ‘As your class president ...’ and ‘My goal is ...

‘여러분의 학급 회장으로서’, ‘제 공약은’과 같은 짧은 문장과 어구를 사용해라.

 

Tip 3 Use pauses.

팁3. 잠시 멈추기를 사용해라.

 

Particularly, pause before introducing your most important points.

특히 너의 말 중 가장 중요한 부분을 이야기하기 전에 잠시 멈춰라.

 

The brief stops will help your classmates follow you more closely.

잠시 멈추는 것은 학급 친구들이 너의 말을 더 주의 깊게 따라오도록 도와준다.

 

Tip 4 Practice using effective body language and eye contact.

팁4. 효과적인 몸짓과 눈맞춤을 연습해라.

 

Using appropriate body language really strengthens your message.

적절한 몸짓을 사용하는 것은 너의 메시지를 정말로 강력하게 만들어준다.

 

Also, maintaining eye contact with the students enables them to feel you’re trustworthy.

또한 학생들과 눈맞춤을 유지하는 것은 그들이 네가 매우 신뢰 있는 사람이라고 느끼게 해준다.

 

D-Day: Delivering my speech

D-Day: 연설을 하다

 

I felt like I had butterflies in my stomach.

나는 속이 조마조마했다.

 

While other candidates were delivering their speeches, I could not pay attention to them.

다른 후보들이 연설을 할 때 나는 그들의 연설에 집중을 할 수가 없었다.

 

When it was my turn, I took a deep breath and started my speech.

내 차례가 되자 나는 깊은 숨을 들이쉬고 연설을 시작했다.

 

My fellow classmates, my name is Eugene Park.

급우 여러분, 저는 박유진입니다.

 

I would like to be your sophomore class president.

저는 여러분의 2학년 학급회장이 되고 싶습니다.

 

As some of you may know, I don’t have any student council experience like most of the other candidates.

여러분 중 몇몇이 알고 있듯이, 저는 다른 후보들 대부분과 같은 학생회 경험이 전혀 없습니다.

 

However, I believe I would make the best president because I clearly understand your needs.

하지만, 저는 여러분의 요구 사항을 정확히 이해하기 때문에 최고의 회장이 되리라 믿습니다.

 

The class president should not only be your representative, but also your friend.

학급회장은 단순히 여러분의 대표뿐만이 아니라 여러분의 친구여야 합니다.

 

My goal is that as your class president, I will make sure every student has a voice.

여러분의 학급 회장으로서 제 목표는 모든 학생들이 자신의 목소리가 있음을 확실히 하겠다는 것입니다.

 

Often, important decisions regarding student issues like field trips and school athletic events are made by just a few students.

종종 현장 학습과 학교 운동회와 같은 학생 쟁점에 관한 중요한 결정들이 아주 소수의 학생에 의해 이루어집니다.

 

As class president, I will listen to every student’s voice, including those of shy students.

학급 회장으로서 저는 수줍음 많은 학생들의 목소리를 포함해 모든 학생들의 목소리를 듣겠습니다.

 

One method is by using various ways to collect opinions, such as notes and SNS messages.

한 가지 방법은 쪽지나 SNS 메시지와 같은 의견을 모으는 다양한 방법들을 사용하는 것입니다.

 

Also, one of my main goals as your class president will be to create a hobby day.

또한 여러분의 학급 회장으로서 제 주요 목표 중 하나는 바로 ‘취미의 날’을 만들겠다는 것입니다.

 

We need to have more fun at school.

우리는 학교에서 좀 더 즐거움을 누릴 필요가 있습니다.

 

So I plan on making a hobby day when we all have chances to do or enjoy each other’s favorite hobbies.

그래서 저는 학생들이 서로 가장 좋아하는 취미를 하거나 즐겨볼 기회를 모두 가지는 ‘취미의 날’을 지정하는 계획을 가지고 있습니다.

 

Experiencing one another’s hobbies will allow us to get to know each other more deeply.

서로의 취미를 경험해보는 것은 우리가 서로를 더욱 더 깊이 알 수 있도록 해줄 것입니다.

 

So I hope in the distant future, we will say,

그래서 저는 먼 미래에, 우리가 이야기하기를 기대합니다.

 

“Hey, remember our sophomore year?

“야, 우리 2학년 때 기억나?

 

That was very fun.”

진짜 재밌었는데!”

 

Finally, if elected your class president, I will highly consider your concerns.

마지막으로, 제가 학급회장으로 선출된다면 저는 여러분의 고민을 크게 고려할 것입니다.

 

I will be a powerful voice because I’m just the same as you.

저는 여러분과 똑같은 사람이기 때문에 강력한 목소리가 될 것입니다.

 

You can come to me for anything you ever need,

여러분은 원하는 것이 있으면 언제든 저를 찾아오면 됩니다,

 

and I’ll always be willing to listen and help.

저는 항상 기꺼이 듣고 도와드릴 것입니다.

 

I hope you make the right choice.

저는 여러분이 꼭 올바른 선택을 하길 바랍니다.

After the election

선거 후

 

Even though I didn’t win the election, I learned many things about preparing for and delivering an election speech.

비록 난 선거에서 승리하지 못했지만, 선거 연설을 준비하고 연설하는 것에 관해 많은 것을 배웠다.

 

Most importantly, I feel more confident in myself,

가장 중요한 것은, 내가 더욱 더 자신감을 가지게 되었다는 것이다,

 

and feel proud of myself.

그리고 내 자신에 대해 자부심을 느끼게 되었다는 것이다.

 

I look forward to another chance in the next election.

다음 선거에서 또 다른 기회를 기대해본다!
