The Best New Thing

최고의 새로운 일

Rada lived on a little world, far out in space.

라다는 우주에서 멀리 떨어진 작은 세계에 살았습니다.

She lived there with her father, mother, and brother Jonny.

그녀는 그곳에서 아버지, 어머니, 형 조니와 함께 살았습니다.

Rada’s father and other people worked on spaceships.

라다의 아버지와 다른 사람들은 우주선에서 일했습니다.

Only Rada and Jonny were children, and they were born in space.

라다와 조니만이 어린 아이였고, 그들은 우주에서 태어났습니다.

One day, Dad told Rada and Jonny, “We’re going back to Earth tomorrow.”

어느 날, 아빠는 라다와 조니에게 "우리는 내일 지구로 돌아갈 거예요."라고 말했어요.

Rada and Jonny looked at Dad in surprise and floated towards him.

라다와 조니는 깜짝 놀라 아빠를 쳐다보며 아빠 쪽으로 떠갔습니다.

Rada asked Dad, “What’s it like on Earth?”

라다는 아빠에게 "지구는 어때요?"라고 물었다.

“Everything is different there.

거긴 모든 게 달라요.

For example, the sky is blue,” answered Dad.

 

예를 들어, 하늘은 파랗습니다.라고 아빠가 대답했습니다.

“I’ve never seen a blue sky,” said Jonny.

저는 파란 하늘을 본 적이 없어요, 라고 조니가 말했어요.

“The sky is always black here,” said Rada.

여기 하늘은 항상 검습니다.라고 라다가 말했습니다.

“You don’t have to wear your big heavy space suits because there is air everywhere.

어디에나 공기가 있기 때문에 대형 무거운 우주복을 입지 않아도 됩니다.

It's also hard to jump there because Earth pulls you down,” said Dad.

 

지구는 여러분을 끌어내리기 때문에 그곳으로 뛰어드는 것도 힘들어요, 라고 아빠가 말했어요.

“What else?” asked Rada.

또 뭐요? 라다가 물었다.

“There are hills, and they are covered with soft green grass.

구릉이 있고, 연녹색의 풀로 덮여 있습니다.

You can roll down the hills,” answered Mom.

 

언덕을 굴러 내려가도 돼요. 엄마가 대답했습니다.

“Dad, have you ever rolled down a hill?” asked Rada.

아빠, 언덕 아래로 굴러본 적 있어요? 라다가 물었다.

“Yes, it’s really amazing!” answered Dad.

네, 정말 놀라워!라고 아빠가 대답했어요.

Jonny was thirsty, so he opened a milk container and shook it.

조니는 목이 말라서 우유통을 열고 흔들었어요.

The milk floated in the air and formed balls.

우유가 공중에 떠서 공이 되었습니다.

Jonny swallowed the balls.

조니는 공을 삼켰어요.

“Jonny, if you drink milk that way on Earth, you’ll get wet,” said Mom.

조니, 지구에서 그렇게 우유를 마시면 젖게 될 거야, 라고 엄마가 말했어요.

Later that night, Rada and Jonny talked a long time about Earth.

그날 밤 늦게, 라다와 조니는 지구에 대해 오랫동안 이야기했습니다.

It was exciting to think about all the new things they were going to see and do.

그들이 보고 할 모든 새로운 것들에 대해 생각하는 것은 흥미로웠습니다.

There was one new thing Rada and Jonny really wanted to do.

라다와 조니가 정말 하고 싶었던 새로운 일이 하나 있었어요.

They thought about it all night and didn’t tell Mom and Dad about it.

그들은 밤새도록 그것에 대해 생각했고 엄마와 아빠에게 그것에 대해 말하지 않았어요.

It was their secret.

The next day, Rada’s family got on a spaceship.

다음날, 라다의 가족은 우주선을 탔습니다.

“It’s going to be a long trip,” said Mom.

긴 여행이 될 거예요, 라고 엄마가 말했어요.

“That’s alright. I’m so excited!” said Rada.

괜찮아요. 너무 신나요! 라다가 말했습니다.

The spaceship finally landed.

우주선이 마침내 착륙했습니다.

“Dad, it’s difficult to walk on Earth,” said Rada.

아빠, 지구 위를 걷는 것은 힘들어요, 라고 라다가 말했어요.

“I know. Earth is pulling you down,” said Dad.

알아요. 지구가 당신을 끌어내리고 있어요, 라고 아빠가 말했어요.

Rada and Jonny couldn’t float anymore. That was the first new thing.

라다와 조니는 더 이상 뜰 수가 없었어요. 그게 첫 번째 새로운 일이었어요.

“What’s that sound?” asked Rada.

그게 무슨 소리예요? 라다가 물었다.

“A bird is singing,” said Mom.

새 한 마리가 노래를 부르고 있어요, 라고 엄마가 말했어요.

“I’ve never heard a bird sing,” said Rada.

저는 새가 노래하는 것을 들어본 적이 없어요, 라고 라다가 말했어요.

“And I’ve never felt the wind,” said Jonny.

그리고 저는 결코 바람을 느껴본 적이 없어요,라고 조니는 말했습니다.

These were all new things.

이것들은 모두 새로운 것들이었어요.

Rada and Jonny ran up the nearest hill.

라다와 조니는 가장 가까운 언덕을 달려 올라갔습니다.

At the top, they looked at each other and laughed.

꼭대기에서, 그들은 서로를 쳐다보며 웃었습니다.

Then they lay down on the soft green grass and rolled down the hill.

그리고는 부드러운 초록빛 풀 위에 드러누워 언덕 아래로 굴러 내려갔습니다.

That was their secret!

그게 그들의 비밀이었어요!

“This is the best new thing of all!” shouted Rada and Jonny.

이것은 가장 좋은 새로운 것입니다!라고 라다와 조니가 말했습니다.

And they ran up to the top of the hill again.

그리고 그들은 다시 언덕 꼭대기로 뛰어올랐습니다.
