Caring for Others

Anansi and Turtle

 Once there was a spider. His name was Anansi. One day, when Anansi started eating a delicious meal, he heard a knock.

Turtle: Knock! Knock! Knock!

Anansi: Who is it?

Turtle: It’s me, Turtle! Can I come in? I walked all day. I’m so hungry!

Anansi: Sure. Walking all day sounds tiring. Have a seat.

Turtle: Thanks. Can you give me some food?

 Anansi had the most food in the village, but he didn’t want to share it. He was very greedy. So, he had an idea.

Anansi: But first, you should wash your hands.

Turtle: Oh, sorry! I’ll come back.

 Turtle came back from the river.

 But his hands were dirty again.

Anansi: I’m sorry, but you can’t sit down. Will you wash them again?

 Turtle went to the river once more and came back. But there was no food.

Anansi: The food got cold, so I had to keep eating. Sorry!

Turtle: Oh, that’s okay. (I hope Anansi will learn an important lesson someday.)

 A few days later, Turtle invited Anansi to dinner.

(Come to my house and let’s eat together.)

Turtle: Welcome!

 Turtle showed Anansi his dinner table, but it was under the water. Anansi couldn’t get down to the table because he was lighter than water.

Turtle: Let’s have this delicious meal together!

 After a while, Anansi came up with a great idea.

Anansi: Aha! Stones are heavier than water. I can fill my coat pockets with small stones. It’ll make me heavier.

 Anansi started putting some small stones into his pockets.

 Finally, Anansi sat at the table.

Turtle: I’m sorry, but you can’t wear a coat at the table.

Anansi: Oh, I didn’t know that! I’ll take it off.

 Just then, he came up, and his head was out of the water.

Anansi: Oh, no!

 옛날에 거미 한 마리가 있었다. 그의 이름은 Anansi였다. 어느 날, Anansi가 맛있는 음식을 먹기 시작할 무렵, 노크 소리를 들었다.

Turtle: (똑! 똑! 똑!)

Anansi: 누구세요?

Turtle: 나야, Turtle! 들어가도 될까? 난 온종일 걸었어. 너무 배고파!

Anansi: 물론이지. 온종일 걷는 것은 피곤할 것 같아. 자리에 앉아.

Turtle: 고마워. 음식 좀 줄 수 있겠어?

 Anansi는 그 마을에서 가장 많은 음식을 가지고 있었지만, 그것을 나눠 주고 싶지 않았다. 그는 아주 욕심이 많았다. 그래서 그는 한 가지 꾀를 내었다.

Anansi: 하지만 먼저, 너는 손을 씻어야 해.

Turtle: 아, 미안해! 갔다 올게.

Turtle이 강으로부터 돌아왔다.

그러나 그의 손은 또 더러워졌다.

Anansi: 미안한데, 넌 앉을 수 없어. 손을 다시 씻을래?

 Turtle은 한 번 더 강으로 갔다가 돌아왔다. 하지만 음식이 없었다.

Anansi: 음식이 차가워져서 내가 계속 먹어야만 했어. 미안해!

Turtle: 아, 괜찮아. (Anansi가 언젠가 중요한 교훈을 깨닫기를 바라.)

 며칠 후, Turtle이 Anansi를 저녁 식사에 초대했다.

Turtle: 환영해!

 Turtle이 Anansi에게 자신의 저녁 식사를 보여 줬으나, 그것은 물 밑에 있었다. Anansi는 물보다 가벼워서 식탁으로 내려갈 수 없었다.

Turtle: 우리 이 맛있는 식사를 함께 먹자!

 잠시 후, Anansi는 좋은 생각 하나를 떠올렸다.

Anansi: (아하! 돌들은 물보다 더 무겁지. 나는 외투 주머니를 작은 돌들로 채울 수 있어. 그것이 나를 더 무겁게 해 줄 거야.)

 Anansi는 그의 주머니에 작은 돌들을 넣기 시작했다.

 마침내, Anansi는 식탁에 앉았다.

Turtle: 미안하지만, 식탁에서는 외투를 입을 수 없어.

Anansi: 아, 내가 몰랐네! 외투를 벗을게.

 바로 그때, 그는 위로 떠올라 머리가 물 밖으로 나왔다.

Anansi: 아, 안 돼!
