Tree-ear bowed low.
목이는 깊이 허리를 숙여 절을 했다.
As he bent down, his courage suddenly fled, leaving his knees as weak as grass.
허리를 굽히자 갑자기 용기가 사라지면서 무릎에 힘이 빠졌다.
I must be hungry, he thought as he straightened his body, ashamed that he could think of such a thing at such a moment.
'내가 너무 굶었구나' 목이는 몸을 바로 세우면서 생각했다. 그리고 그 순간에 그런 생각을 떠올린다는 것이 부끄러웠다.
You are here from Julpo. From Potter Min, the emissary stated.
줄포에서 왔구나. 민 도공이 보냈다고. 왕실 감독관이 말했다.
Yes, honorable sir.
예, 나리.
The emissary waited. "Well?" he said. "Where is the work?"
감독관이 기다리다가 입을 열었다. "음, 그런데 작품은 어디 있느냐?"
Tree-ear swallowed hard.
목이는 침을 꿀꺽 삼켰다.
Sir, on my way here, I was attacked by robbers.
They—theydestroyedmymaster'swork—
나리, 제가 이곳으로 오는 중에 강도의 습격을 받았습니다.
그들이...그들이...제스승님의작품을망가뜨렸습니다.......
The assistant stepped forward in anger.
부하가 화가 나서 앞으로 나왔다.
How dare you, fool! How dare you demand to meet the emissary with nothing to show him!
네 놈이 감히, 이 멍청이 같으니라고! 어떻게 보여 드릴 것도 없이 감히 나리를 뵙기를 청하느냐!
He grabbed Tree-ear's arm to pull him out the door.
그는 목이를 문밖으로 끌어내려고 그의 팔을 붙잡았다.
The weakness in Tree-ear's knees spread through his whole body.
이제는 목이의 무릎에만 힘이 빠진 것이 아니라 온몸에서 힘이 빠져나갔다.
The assistant was right. He had been a fool.
부하의 말이 옳았다. 그는 멍청이였다.
First, he was a failure, now he was a fool.
처음에는 실패자였고 지금은 멍청이였다.
But the emissary had risen to his feet and gestured at his assistant, who stepped back.
그런데 감독관이 자리에서 일어나더니 부하에게 손짓을 했고, 부하는 뒤로 물러섰다.
I am greatly disappointed, Emissary Gim said.
무척이나 실망스럽구나. 김 감독관이 말했다.
I have been looking forward to seeing Potter Min's work again.
민 도공의 작품을 다시 보게 되기를 몹시 기다려 왔는데 말이다.
Tree-ear hung his head.
목이가 고개를 떨구었다.
Humblest apologies to the honorable emissary, he mumbled.
감독관 나리께 미천한 이놈이 사죄드립니다. 목이는 웅얼거렸다.
Slowly, he took the shard from his waist pouch.
목이는 천천히 허리 주머니에서 사금파리를 꺼냈다.
He drew in a deep breath and looked down at the shard before he spoke.
말을 잇기 전에 그는 숨을 깊이 들이쉬고 사금파리를 내려다보았다.
It looked odd, wrapped in clay.
그것은 진흙으로 싸여 있어서 이상해 보였다.
But the inlay work was still delicate and clear, the glaze still fine and pure.
그러나 상감 무늬는 여전히 정교하고 선명했으며, 유약은 여전히 곱고 깨끗했다.
Seeing it gave Tree-ear a last pulse of courage.
그것을 보니 목이의 가슴에서 마지막 용기가 솟아났다.
It is only a piece, honorable Emissary.

And with both hands, he held it out for the emissary.
그리고 목이는 두 손으로 감독관에게 그것을 내밀었다.
The emissary looked surprised but accepted the offering.
감독관은 놀란 표정이었지만 목이가 건넨 것을 받아 주었다.
He inspected it carefully.
그는 그것을 주의 깊게 살폈다.
He took off the wrapping of clay and looked carefully at the edges of the shard.
그는 싸고 있던 진흙을 벗겨 내고 사금파리의 가장자리를 자세히 들여다보았다.
Then Emissary Gim sat down at his table again.

He chose one of the scrolls in front of him, picked up his brush, and began writing.

Tree-ear stood with his head bowed to hide tears of shame.
목이는 부끄러움에 나오는 눈물을 감추기 위해 고개를 숙인 채 서 있었다.
Obviously, the emissary had already moved on to other business, but it would be rude for Tree-ear to leave before he had been dismissed.
감독관은 이미 다른 업무로 넘어간 게 분명했다. 하지만 물러가라는 명을 받기 전에 목이가 자리를 뜨는 것은 무례한 일일 것이었다.
He wondered if he should take back the shard, which the emissary had placed carefully on the table.
목이는 감독관이 조심스럽게 탁자 위에 올려둔 사금파리를 다시 가져와야 하는 게 아닐까 생각했다.
In his despair, Tree-ear still felt grateful — grateful that the emissary had not laughed in his face for the stupidity of traveling all that way with only a single shard to show.
절망한 가운데서도 목이는 감사한 마음을 느꼈다. 고작 감독관에게 보여줄 사금파리 한 조각을 가지고 그 먼 길을 온 자신의 어리석은 행동을 감독관이 면전에 대고 비웃지 않은 것이 감사했다.
At his side he heard the assistant gasp in surprise.
그의 옆에서 부하가 깜짝 놀라 숨을 헉 하고 쉬는 소리가 들렸다.
The emissary had called the man and was showing him the scroll.
감독관이 그를 불러서 두루마리를 보여 주고 있었다.
Go. See that it is done, said the emissary.
가게. 반드시 이 일이 성사되도록 하게. 감독관이 말했다.
Master — The assistant hesitated.
나리...... 부하가 주저하며 말했다.
How is it that a commission can be awarded without seeing the work?
작품을 보지도 않고 주문 결정을 내리시다니 어찌 된 일입니까?
The man's polite words could not hide the disapproval in his voice.
정중한 말투였지만 그의 목소리에 담긴 못마땅함은 숨길 수가 없었다.
I understand your skepticism, the emissary answered patiently.
자네가 미심쩍어하는 걸 이해하네. 감독관이 참을성 있게 대답했다.
But I have seen this man's work, in Julpo and again here.
하지만 나는 이 사람의 작품을 줄포에서 보았고 이곳에서 다시 보았네.
He bent and picked up the shard from the table.
그는 몸을 숙여 탁자에서 사금파리를 집어 들었다.
Do you see this? 'Glow of jade and clarity of water' — that is what is said about the finest celadon glaze. It is said of very few pieces.
이게 보이는가? '비색 광채와 물처럼 투명한 빛깔', 그것이 가장 뛰어난 청자 유약에 대해 쓰는 표현이네. 이런 말을 듣는 작품은 극히 드물지.
He paused for a moment and held the shard up before him.
그는 잠시 말을 멈추고 사금파리를 앞으로 들어 올렸다.
It is true of this one. And the inlay work is remarkable.
이 작품이 바로 그렇다네. 그리고 상감 무늬가 정말 뛰어나.
His voice faded for a moment as he gazed in obvious admiration at the shard.
누가 봐도 감탄하는 얼굴로 사금파리를 바라보는 동안 그의 목소리가 잠시 작아졌다.
Then he handed the scroll to the assistant.
그리고 그는 부하에게 두루마리를 건넸다.
Now, go and do as I ask you.
자, 가서 내가 명한 대로 행하게.
The assistant bowed quickly and left.
부하는 재빨리 허리를 굽혀 절하고 자리를 떴다.
Emissary Gim looked at Tree-ear.
김 감독관이 목이를 바라보았다.
There was kindness in his eyes — like Crane-man's.
그의 다정한 눈빛이 두루미 아저씨의 눈빛 같았다.
I have written orders for him to secure your trip back to Julpo by sea, he said.
네가 뱃길로 줄포까지 무사히 돌아갈 수 있게 하라는 명령을 써넣었다. 그가 말했다.
You will go and deliver a message to your master for me. I am assigning him a commission.
Tellme,haveyouworkedforPotterMinlong?
가서 내 얘기를 스승에게 전하거라. 내가 그에게 주문을 맡길 것이다.
말해보거라,너는민도공밑에서오래일했느냐?
Tree-ear was stunned by the man's words, spoken in such a calm, ordinary voice.
목이는 그렇게 차분하고도 일상적인 목소리에서 나오는 그의 말에 정신이 멍해졌다.
Through his disbelief and confusion, he heard himself answer, "A year and a half, honorable sir."
믿기지 않고 혼란스러운 가운데 그는 자신이 대답하는 소리를 들었다. "한 해 하고 반입니다, 나리."
Good. Then perhaps you can tell me — for your master to do his best work, how many pieces per year might I expect from him?
됐다. 그러면 네가 대답해 줄 수 있겠구나. 네 스승이 최선을 다해 일할 경우에 내가 한 해에 몇 작품이나 받을 수 있겠느냐?
Concentrating on the answer to the emissary's question helped steady Tree-ear.
감독관의 질문에 답을 하기 위해 정신을 집중하는 것이 목이를 진정시키는 데 도움이 됐다.
I think ten. Not fewer, but I don't think he can make many more.
열 작품인 것 같습니다. 그보다 적지는 않습니다만, 그보다 훨씬 더 많을 거라고는 생각되지 않습니다.
He looked up and spoke with quiet pride, "My master works slowly."
목이는 고개를 들고 속으로 자부심을 느끼며 말했다. "제 스승님은 천천히 일하십니다."
The emissary nodded slowly, "He must. We need his best work."
감독관은 천천히 고개를 끄덕였다. "그래야지. 우리는 그의 최고 작품이 필요해."
He bowed his head to Tree-ear, "If you have need of shelter here in Songdo, my assistant will see to it that you are housed and fed until the boat sails.
그는 목이를 향해 고개를 숙였다. "여기 송도에서 머물 곳이 필요하다면 배가 뜰 때까지 네 거처와 음식을 내 부하가 마련해 줄 것이다.
Your coming is greatly appreciated."
네가 와 줘서 정말 고맙구나."
Tree-ear wanted to laugh, to cry, to throw his arms around the emissary and dance wildly around the room.
목이는 소리 내어 웃고, 울기도 하면서, 감독관을 끌어안고 방을 돌며 신나게 춤을 추고 싶었다.
Instead, he bowed all the way to the ground.
그러는 대신 목이는 바닥에 엎드려 절을 했다.
He could not speak but prayed that the emissary understood his silent thanks.
말할 수는 없었지만 자신이 마음속으로 얼마나 감사해하는지 감독관이 알아주길 기도했다.
There were some things that could not be put into words.
말로 표현할 수 없는 것들이 있기 마련이다.
