Once upon a time there was a traveler who set out upon a journey.

옛날에 여행을 떠난 한 나그네가 있었다.

 

It was a magic journey.

그것은 마술같은 여행이었다.

 

It seemed very long when he began it, but very short when he got half way through.

여행은 그가 출발할 때는 매우 길어 보였지만, 반쯤 지났을 때는 매우 짧아 보였다.

 

He traveled along a dark path without seeing anything, until at last he came to a beautiful child.

그는 아무것도 보이지 않는 깜깜한 길을 따라 가다가, 마침내 한 아름다운 아이를 만났다.

 

He asked the child, "What do you do here?"

그는 아이에게 물었다. "넌 여기서 뭐 하니?"

 

And the child replied, "I am always at play. Come and play with me!"

그러자 아이가 대답했다. "저는 항상 놀고 있어요. 와서 저와 함께 놀아요!"

 

So he played with that child the whole day long, and they were merry.

그래서 그는 하루 종일 그 아이와 놀았고, 그들은 즐거웠다.

 

The sky was so blue, the sun was so bright, the leaves were so green, and they saw so many butterflies, that everything was beautiful.

하늘은 매우 파랬고, 태양은 매우 밝았으며, 나뭇잎들은 매우 푸르렀고, 그들은 나비들을 매우 많이 봤으며 그 모든 것이 아름다웠다.

 

This was in fine weather.

When it rained, they loved to watch the falling drops and to smell the fresh scents.

When it blew, they loved to listen to the rushing wind, driving the clouds before it, and making the sea roar in fury.

But when it snowed, that was best of all; for they liked nothing so much as to look up at the white flakes falling, and to listen to the silence upon the paths.

He called over and over again, but got no answer.

So he went back to the road and went on for a while without meeting anything, until at last he came to a handsome boy.

He asked the boy, "What do you do here?"

And the boy replied, "I am always learning. Come and learn with me."

So he learned with that boy about Jupiter and Juno, and the Greeks and the Romans.

그래서 그는 그 소년과 함께 Jupiter와 Juno(그리스 신화에 나오는 Jupiter의 부인), 그리고 그리스인과 로마인에 대해서 배웠다.

 

But they were not always learning; they played the merriest games that ever were played.

They rowed upon the river and skated on the ice; they were active on foot and on horseback, at cricket, and at all ball games.

They had parties where they danced till midnight.

However, one day, in the middle of these pleasures, the traveler lost the boy, just as he had lost the child, and, after calling in vain, continued his journey.

그러나 어느 날, 이렇게 즐겁던 도중에 그 나그네는 아이를 잃어버렸던 것과 똑같이 그 소년을 잃어버렸다. 그리고 헛되이 부른 후에 여행을 계속했다.

 

He went on for a while without seeing anything, until at last he came to a young man.

He asked the young man, "What do you do here?"

그는 젊은이에게 물었다. "자네는 여기서 무엇을 하나?"

 

And the young man replied, "I am always in love. Come and love with me."

그러자 그 젊은이가 대답했다. "저는 항상 사랑에 빠져 있어요. 와서 저와 사랑을 해요."

 

So he went away with that young man, and they met one of the prettiest girls that ever was seen.

그래서 그는 그 젊은이와 함께 갔고, 그들은 지금까지 본 가장 예쁜 여자들 중 한 명을 만났다.

 

So the young man fell in love directly.

그러자 그 젊은이는 바로 사랑에 빠졌다.

 

They quarreled sometimes and they made up.

They wrote letters and were always looking out for one another.

They were engaged at Christmas time, and were going to be married soon.

But the traveler lost them one day.

He called to them, but they never came back, so he went upon his journey.

He went on for a while without seeing anything, until at last he came to a middle-aged gentleman.

He asked the gentleman, "What are you doing here?"

And his answer was, "I am always busy. Come and be busy with me!"

So he became very busy with that gentleman, and they went on their journey through the woods together.

The woods had been open and green at first, like woods in spring, but now they began to be thick and dark, like woods in summer.

Some of the trees were even turning brown.

The gentleman was not alone.

He had a lady with him, who was his wife; and they had children with them, too.

They all went through the woods, cutting down trees, making a path through the branches, and working hard.

Sometimes they came to an avenue that opened into deeper woods.

Then they would hear a little, distant voice crying, "Father, father, I am another child! Stop for me!"

And they would see a little figure, growing larger as it ran to join them.

When it came up, they all crowded round it, and kissed and welcomed it.

Sometimes they came to several avenues at once, and then they all stood still.

One of the children said, "Father, I am going to sea," and another said, "Father, I am going to India."

With many tears at parting, each child went on its way; and the child who went to Heaven rose into the golden air and vanished.

Whenever these partings happened, the traveler looked at the gentleman and saw him glance up at the sky, where the day was beginning to decline, and the sunset to come on.

But they could not rest for long, for they had to continue on their journey.

At last there had been so many partings that there were no children left, and the traveler, the gentleman, and the lady went upon their way.

Now the woods were yellow, then brown, and then the leaves began to fall.

They came to an avenue that was darker than the rest, and were pressing forward when the lady stopped.

My husband, said the lady, "I am called."

And they heard a voice calling from the avenue, "Mother, mother!"

It was the voice of the child who had said, "I am going to Heaven!"

The father said, "I pray not yet.

The sunset is very near.

But the voice cried, "Mother, mother!" not minding him, though his hair was now quite white, and tears were on his face.

And she was gone.

They went on together, until they came near to the end of the woods: so near that they could see the sunset shining red through the trees.

Yet once more, while he broke his way among the branches, the traveler lost his friend.

He called and called, but there was no reply, and when he passed out of the woods and saw the serene sun going down, he came to an old man sitting on a fallen tree.

He asked the old man, "What do you do here?"

So the traveler sat down by the old man, facing the serene sunset, and all his friends came softly back and stood around him.

The beautiful child, the handsome boy, the young man in love, the father, mother, and children: every one of them was there, and he had lost nothing.

아름다운 아이, 잘생긴 소년, 사랑에 빠진 젊은이, 아버지, 어머니, 그리고 아이들. 그 모든 사람들이 거기 있었고, 그는 아무도 잃어버리지 않았다.

 

So he loved them all, and they all honored and loved him.

And I think the traveler must be yourself, dear Grandfather, because this is what you do to us, and what we do to you.
